Job Title: Residence Counselor

Reports To: Residential Community Coordinator
Supervisory Responsibilities: none

SUMMARY
Provide counseling and milieu management within the residential environment.

CLINICAL DUTIES/EXPECTATIONS:

1. Performs and coordinates general counseling responsibilities.

  • Conducts psycho-educational groups
  • Coordinates milieu related meetings (community meeting, meditation, etc.)
  • Assists clients in completion of counseling assignments (therapy assignments, step work, etc.)
  • Performs case management responsibilities (schedule outside appointments)
  • Monitor Group participation and attendance (assist with engaging clients who need support)
  • Provide one-on-one supervision of at-risk clients (AMA risk, suicidal ideation, etc.) according to protocol and per supervisor directive

 

2. Maintains residential milieu

  • Assist with admission and discharge process, including completion of related documentation (orientation, contraband and medication forms, discharge paperwork, etc,)
  • Ensures program schedule is maintained
  • Assists clients with self-care and other living skills
  • Supervise meal time (monitor clean up duties)
  • Maintains cleanliness, assist clients to develop appropriate cleaning skills by role modeling (room checks)
  • Directly performs daily maintenance responsibilities (maintain organized office area and general client areas)

 

3. Provides direct care for clients

  • Ensures orientation of new clients immediately upon admission.
  • Provides empathic, supportive approach to all client interactions by acting as a sounding board for the individual. Confrontation is not used.
  • Obtains all medications from clients at intake and secures according to policy.
  • Employs de-escalation techniques.
  • Monitor client self-administration of medication and documents according to policy.
  • Receives and records Physician' Medication Orders over the telephone; documents properly in chart and creates appropriate routine medication administration sheets.
  • Communicates directly with Primary Therapists, Internists, and Psychiatrists regarding client non-compliance with prescribed medications, including effects of medication on client behavior and general health concerns.
  • Log all communications with doctors on appropriate forms.
  • Utilizes emergency on-call system according to policy.
  • Documents according to shift protocol requirements.
  • Enter shift notes for each client in client chart; minimum of one client note summarizing client behaviors throughout the shift
  • Understand Client Chart sections and appropriate use.
  • Conducts safety drills as described in agency protocol.

 

4. Performs responsibilities according to guidelines, and applies performance feedback.

  • Meets quality expectations of accuracy, completeness, and is responsive to feedback.
  • Meets timeliness expectations of completing work as scheduled, demonstrating self-paced performance and adjusting priorities as needed
  • Professionally and ethically relates to clients and peers at all times
  • Participates in staff meetings
  • Participates in training and meets agency and licensure expectations related to training

5. Client Relations Skills and Professional Behavior

  • Represents The Canyon in a manner, which conveys a professional, courteous, caring, and cooperative attitude.
  • Is knowledgeable of Client Rights and treats all clients with dignity and respect in a consistent, caring manner.
  • Understands need for and maintains appropriate confidentiality at all times when interacting with clients, families, visitors, referral sources and all other contacts.
  • Exhibits excellent customer relation skills as evidenced by supportive and constructive communication with all contacts including coworkers, clients, visitors, families and referral sources.
  • Utilizes an open, non-judgmental, non-discriminatory, professional and therapeutic approach to treatment with all clients.
  • Demonstrates professional behavior and interpersonal skills reflective of The Canyon mission statement and philosophy.
  • Complies with facility, departmental, safety and human resources policies.
  • Promotes a safe work environment for self, clients and coworkers by complying with environmental safety, and infection control and universal precaution guidelines.
  • Maintains a neat, professional appearance consistent with the dress code.
  • Maintains scheduling requirements, attendance and punctuality in accordance with policy.
  • Understands the need for appropriate client/staff boundaries and maintains a strict therapeutic relationship during active treatment. Discontinues communication with clients upon discharge. Informs supervisor of client contact after discharge.
  • Demonstrates ability to professionally interact with coworkers and other company staff concerning issues related to client care and offers constructive alternatives.
  • Serves as role model for other staff through maintaining a professional approach and providing a positive work environment and team spirit.

6. Performs other duties as assigned

General Qualifications

  • Understanding of principles of psychiatric and addictions treatment
  • Understanding of psychiatric medications and importance of client medication compliance.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Understanding of diverse cultures and gender specific issues and ability to incorporate needs of gender and culturally diverse groups into practice setting.
  • Good organizational skills; ability to prioritize workload and work independently.
  • Must comply with drug-free workplace guidelines.
  • Current First Aid certification (or willing to accept training prior to work)
  • CPR certification (or willing to accept training prior to work)
  • Completion of health Screening Report by own physician, including TB Test.
  • Must have a valid California Drivers License and be insurable by The Companies' Insurance Company to drive Canyon vehicles and transport clients - a DMV Driving Record must be submitted and approved by The Companies' Insurance Company (this is a required condition of employment).

 

Education/Experience

  • CAADAC certification or working toward certification. Minimum of a High School diploma or GED or Bachelor Degree in Psychology, Social Work, or other Health Related Field
  • Negative urine drug screen
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule
  • 6 months experience working with dually diagnosed individuals preferred.
