Alcohol Rehabilitation Statistics
If you consider the thousands of commercials for alcohol on TV that we see every year, the number of fictional incidents on primetime television shows that highlight alcohol use and abuse and the $2 billion that the liquor industry spends on advertising every year, it should comes as no surprise that alcohol is the number one drug problem in the United States.
At The Canyon, we do our part to fight the problem of alcoholism and alcohol abuse in America by offering a comprehensive inpatient and/ or outpatient alcohol rehab on our mountain estate in Peace Park, California, just outside of Beverly Hills. No matter how you came to alcoholism, no matter how much you lost along the way, The Canyon can help you get your life back with our premier alcohol rehab.
Alcohol Rehabilitation Statistics: Addiction
On average, Americans drink more than 25 gallons of beer, 2 gallons of wine, and 1.5 gallons of distilled spirits each year. Perhaps due to this constant exposure to alcohol, more than 15 million people in this country are physically dependent upon alcohol. Of those, about half a million are between the ages of 9 and 12. Additionally, more than 43 percent of Americans have family members who struggle with alcoholism.
And it's not just alcoholics who have a problem with the drug. Alcohol abuse through binge drinking is just as common as alcoholism: about 7 million Americans between the ages of 12 and 20 are binge drinkers. Note that that means that about 20 percent of that 7 million are underage.
Alcohol Rehabilitation Statistics: The Cost
The cost of alcoholism starts with the price of the bottle: each year, Americans spend more than $90 billion on alcohol. Students alone drop $5.5 billion on alcoholic beverages, more than they spend on other drinks and their books combined.
But the cost of alcoholism and alcohol abuse extends far beyond this first initial cost. It is estimated that problems related to alcohol cost our economy at least $100 million in lost productivity and medical expenses each year. A little under 7 percent of full time employees are heavy drinkers, drinking five or more drinks per session on five or more days a month. In hospitals across the country, about 25 percent of those admitted have alcohol problems or are being admitted for problems due to alcohol abuse.
Alcohol Rehabilitation Statistics: Death
Aside from the health problems associated with alcohol abuse and alcoholism - liver failure, heart failure, and heart disease to name a few - death is not uncommon especially when vehicles are concerned. It is estimated that there are more than 1.46 million arrests across the country for driving while intoxicated. In fact, half of all driving fatalities involve alcohol. Every half hour, one person in the United States dies in an alcohol related car accident, about 17,500 people every year.
