Dealing with a Family Member in Alcohol Rehab
When your family member suffers from alcoholism, you are affected in a number of ways. Not only is the behavior and tone of the house erratic depending upon the phase and stage of alcoholism, but your emotions are constantly frazzled, your finances quickly become a mess thanks to behavior under the influence and you are in a constant state of waiting in terms of the next situation you'll field thanks to your alcoholic family member.
If someone you love is an alcoholic and in need of alcohol rehab, at The Canyon, we can help.
Dealing with a Family Member in Alcohol Rehab: Emotions
The range of emotions that you experience daily is extreme when you have an alcoholic as a family member. Your love for your spouse, significant other, brother or sister, or parent means that you are emotionally invested in the choices that that person makes. When he or she continuously makes choices that hurt you, themselves and others in the family, you may end up irritated, embarrassed, physically hurt, saddened, and even forced to clean up and cover up the damage to keep others from finding out. If nothing else, it is emotionally taxing to live with someone in need of alcohol rehab. The good news is that once they've gone into alcohol treatment, you are given a chance to take a breath, take a break and regroup.
Dealing with a Family Member in Alcohol Rehab: Finances
Finances are often hit hard when a family member becomes addicted to alcohol. The amount of money spent on bottles for consumption at home, drinks out at bars, restaurants and clubs as well as the inordinate cost of damages that occur while your loved one is under the influence. Legal fees, home damage, car damage, health and medical costs, not to mention lost income due to sick days caused by hangovers or lost jobs due to poor performance... the costs add up. Even though alcohol rehab won't take those bills away, at least you can rest knowing that no more bills will be thrown on the pile caused by alcoholic behavior.
Dealing with a Family Member in Alcohol Rehab: Preparing for Change
Your loved one's time spent in alcohol rehab gives you a short respite from the drama of living with addiction. As nice as it will be to use that time to relax and reorganize a little bit, perhaps see some friends that you haven't had time for or even take a weekend trip for yourself, it is recommended that you also find a support group for family members of alcoholics if you haven't already and consider personal therapy as well. Your life and health are just as important as the alcoholic's in your life but the focus has been on them since their addiction took over. Though you may choose to remain involved with your family member in the future, it is important that you learn how to do so without forgetting your own life goals.
