Outpatient Versus Inpatient Alcohol Rehab
If you are addicted to alcohol, there are two main types of treatment available for you to choose from: inpatient treatment and outpatient treatment. No matter which one you choose, your success starts with a complete understanding of what each of these types of treatments has to offer you and choosing the one that will best work for you.
At The Canyon, we provide both outpatient and inpatient treatment for those who are struggling with the disease of alcohol addiction. Our alcohol rehab facilities can help you break your addiction and return to a healthy life without dependence upon alcohol.
Inpatient Versus Outpatient Alcohol Rehab: The Similarities
There are many similarities between inpatient and outpatient alcohol rehab programs. To begin with, both types of treatment regimens involve group therapies as well as couples and family therapies, to help address the problems that alcoholism causes both the individual and their family and friends. Both treatment programs also provide direction and guidance to the patients and their families to educate them about what alcoholism is and how to set and meet appropriate goals for treatment and recovery.
Inpatient Versus Outpatient Alcohol Rehab: The Differences
The biggest difference between inpatient and outpatient therapy is where you sleep each night. Inpatient therapy involves a 24/7 stay in a residential treatment facility that is isolated from the outside world. The goal is to provide a setting that keeps distractions and temptations to a minimum and allows you to focus on your recovery. These types of treatment programs can be as short as four to six weeks or as long as several months to a year, depending on the severity of your addiction. Inpatient alcohol rehab is beneficial for those who are severely addicted or who have had trouble succeeding in other treatment settings in the past.
Outpatient alcohol rehab is generally suggested for those who aren't heavily addicted to alcohol but still need help breaking their addiction to the drug. Treatment usually involves one or more meetings per week that can last from one to several hours and include behavioral therapy, group therapy and single therapy sessions, as well as educational classes and other treatments. Most people who have never been to drug or alcohol rehab before first seek treatment in an outpatient facility as do those who have achieved years of recovery but have either relapsed repeatedly or are coming out of a long relapse session.
Inpatient Versus Outpatient Alcohol Rehab: Which is Right for You?
When seeking treatment for alcohol addiction, you need to decide whether inpatient or outpatient treatment is right for you. Here are some things to consider:
- Outpatient treatment allows individuals to continue working, going to school and - in general - continuing their normal life
- Inpatient treatment is much more costly than outpatient treatment
- Outpatient treatment allows you to stay with and see relatives and friends, whereas inpatient treatment usually involves isolation from the outside world
- Inpatient therapy has an environment free from distractions and temptations, whereas outpatient therapy will allow you to be exposed to temptations that may lead to relapse.
- Inpatient therapy allows you to completely recover physically and make a big dent in your emotional and spiritual recovery before you go back to the 'real world.'
