Private Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs

Millions of people in the United States are affected by alcoholism. In fact, according to a study done by the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse (NIAA), there are at least 700,000 Americans who are treated for this disease each day. Some types of treatment, such as the popular Alcoholics Anonymous, have been around for decades while other treatment methods are newer and still being researched to determine their best use. Clinical research into the effectiveness of treatments has come up with important findings that has helped - and continues to help - improve the ability of doctors to treat alcoholic patients.

The Canyon, a private alcohol rehab center in the Santa Monica Mountains, provides programs and treatments that help patients overcome their addiction to alcohol and go on to lead healthy, normal lives. The staff at The Canyon are professionally trained and equipped to handle both mental and emotional problems that often accompany alcoholism. Treatments can help with things like alcohol interventions and the prevention of relapse. In short, The Canyon has the tools you need to recover from this debilitating disease.

The Basis for Most Private Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs

AA, or Alcoholics Anonymous, is one of the most well-known treatment programs for alcohol addiction. In AA, a self-help treatment is used in which patients participate in a series of physical, written and mental activities that help lead them to recovery and abstinence. AA is not the only treatment available, though, and one study showed that patients who received inpatient and outpatient therapy in addition to participating in AA had better outcomes in recovering from their addictions than patients who only had one type of therapy or treatment.

Additionally, another study revealed that alcoholics who went through either cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or a 12 step program combined with CBT also did better than people who only participated in a 12 step program. Studies such as these show that using a combination of therapies and treatments is actually better for the patient, because it provides them with a multitude of resources and people who can help them conquer their addiction. In fact, a combination of some type of psychotherapy and a 12 step program such as AA produces the best results for alcoholic patients.

Other Treatments Available in Private Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs

There are many other types of treatments available, especially from private alcohol rehab programs. One of these options is called Motivational Enhancement Therapy, or MET. MET's goal is to increase a patient's motivation to stop drinking and maintain abstinence. To accomplish this, the therapist gauges the individual's willingness and readiness to change, and then adjusts feedback according to their measurements.

Another type of therapy is Couples Therapy, which generally takes place in the company of a patient's primary care physician. This therapy generally involves the transfer of information about the negative impacts and consequences of alcoholism and heavy drinking, as well as offering up information about support programs that exist in the community.

A third type of therapy (though there are many more available) is called pharmacotherapy, and involves the intake of a drug called naltrexone. Naltrexone can be a powerful aid to alcoholics by helping to prevent their relapse while they are in recovery. Another drug called acamprosate is also helpful, and has been successfully use in the UK and is currently undergoing clinical trials in the USA. Pharmacotherapy treatments are not as common as other types of therapy, but can be extremely helpful in situations where a patient has an abnormally strong addiction.
