Alcohol Treatment and Interventions

Realizing that your loved one has a problem with alcohol that requires medical treatment is difficult enough for you to process. How much more difficult is it to convey the need for alcohol rehab to your loved one? In some cases, it can seem impossible in the face of their denial. But an alcohol intervention with the goal of getting your loved one the alcohol treatment he or she needs is like anything else: accomplished one step at a time.

At The Canyon, if you need assistance planning or executing an alcohol treatment intervention, we have professional interventionists who can help.

Alcohol Treatment and Interventions: Is Now the Time?

Timing is important for alcohol treatment and an alcohol intervention. There are a number of factors to take into consideration when choosing the time for an intervention:

  • The subject of the alcohol intervention cannot be drunk when you approach him or her. If they are, everyone involved will need to wait for them to sober up and then continue with the intervention.
  • Schedule conflicts are difficult to maneuver when you have multiple people involved. Don't put it off too long, however, in an attempt to find a time when everyone can get together. Alcohol treatment is a medical necessity and, like all diseases, alcoholism is more effectively treated the earlier it is caught.

Alcohol Treatment and Interventions: Who to Invite

There are a few criteria to keep in mind when narrowing down who to include in your loved one's alcohol intervention. Remember to keep it relatively small as each person will be invited to speak briefly. Consider choosing people who are:

  • Immediate family members.
  • Extended family members who live nearby.
  • Those who are respected by your loved one, including clergy or church members, childhood mentors, professors, close friends of the family.

Do not choose those who regularly abuse drugs or alcohol or anyone likely to be under the influence of alcohol or a prescription medication at the time of the intervention. Also, don't choose people who currently have issues with your loved one or anyone whom he or she disrespects. The focus should remain on your friend or family member struggling with alcoholism, not the issues of others or the issues that

Alcohol Treatment and Interventions: How to Plan It

You'll need to gather everyone together for a "dry run," so to speak, before the actual alcohol intervention just to clarify details and make sure everyone is on the same page. Choose a date and time, choose an order in which people will say their piece to the subject of the intervention, and make sure that everyone is clear on what it is that they are supposed to focus on. Remember, this is a nonjudgmental event. Each attendee should talk about how they personally have been affected by their friend's alcoholism and their behavior under the influence. No condemnations or insults. This is a short piece meant to convey the severity of the situation to the person who needs to hear it most.
