Alcohol Treatment Program Statistics
Research and statistics synthesize what has happened in the past into numbers that inform what we can expect in the future. When you look at alcohol treatment program statistics, you can see who's getting help for alcohol abuse and addiction, what kind of alcohol treatment they are enrolling in and a closer look at the results a year after alcohol treatment.
The Canyon is an alcohol treatment program located in southern California just outside of Los Angeles. Our therapeutic options are all evidence-based treatments that effect efficient and safe progress through alcohol detox and alcohol addiction treatment.
Alcohol Treatment Program Statistics: Who Goes to Alcohol Rehab?
According to the most recent numbers released by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) for 2006, about 21.9 percent of everyone admitted to a substance abuse treatment program did so due to alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse issues. Another 17.8 percent entered alcohol rehab for a combination of alcohol addiction and addiction to other drugs as well. That means that about 40 percent of everyone who entered drug treatment did so due to alcoholism.
Of those who entered treatment in 2006, NIDA tells us that about 59 percent of them were Caucasian, while 21 percent were African American and 14 percent were Hispanic. The largest group (14.4 percent) were between the ages of 20 and 24 years old, another 14 percent were between the ages of 25 and 29 and 23.9 percent were between 40 and 44.
Alcohol Treatment Program Statistics: Types of Alcohol Rehab
When you decide to go to alcohol rehab, you can choose from a number of different types. You may opt for an outpatient alcohol treatment program at a rehab facility or a mental health center or you may choose an inpatient alcohol treatment program at a hospital or rehab. Some even choose to attend a short-term detox-only micro program that addresses only the physical dependence upon alcohol. Still others don't get alcohol treatment until they are in prison or jail.
Here's how it breaks down statistically, according to the Office of Applied Studies:
In terms of outpatient versus inpatient alcohol treatment, the numbers fall pretty evenly on both sides with about 49 percent choosing inpatient rehab and the rest opting for some form of outpatient alcohol treatment.
About 18 percent of those who entered treatment in 2007 chose to do so at a hospital as an inpatient. Another 30 percent opted for an inpatient alcohol rehab facility. About 43 percent chose to undergo outpatient alcohol treatment at an alcohol rehab facility, while 24 percent did outpatient treatment through a mental health facility. Nine percent underwent alcohol addiction treatment at a prison or jail facility, and an amazing 53 percent followed up their alcohol rehab through outpatient support group meetings like Alcoholics Anonymous.
