Alcohol Treatment and Withdrawal
Withdrawal from alcohol usually comes part and parcel with alcohol treatment. Few alcoholics manage to escape a physical addiction to alcohol and so the first phase of any alcohol treatment program will likely address alcohol withdrawal through alcohol detox. Without first treating the physical dependence upon alcohol and stabilizing the body, it would be impossible to focus on behavioral therapy and other treatment options throughout the rest of alcohol addiction treatment.
At The Canyon, alcohol detox for alcohol withdrawal is our first priority for you when you begin our alcohol treatment program. Located in California, just outside of Beverly Hills and Los Angeles, you can choose between our inpatient alcohol treatment or outpatient alcohol rehab option. Contact us at The Canyon today for more information.
Alcohol Treatment and Withdrawal Symptoms
The withdrawal symptoms of a serious alcohol addiction a fairly easy to spot: nausea and vomiting, inability to sleep or eat, hand tremors and racing heartbeat, sweating and headache. A less physically overwhelming physical addiction to alcohol may be less easy to spot through withdrawal symptoms: shakiness; mood swings including irritability, anxiety and depression; fatigue; nightmares; and more. The most serious physical addictions to alcohol manifest through withdrawal symptoms that are impossible to ignore: delirium, seizures and convulsions, agitation, blackouts, and high fever.
If you have any withdrawal symptoms at all, be they mild, moderate or severe, it is recommended that you seek alcohol treatment immediately.
Alcohol Treatment and Withdrawal: Alcohol Detox
Alcohol detox is the first phase of alcohol treatment when withdrawal symptoms are present. Depending upon the severity of your withdrawal symptoms as well as the existence of co-occurring physical issues, you may require medical monitoring and treatment. Others may simply need rest and time before they move onto the therapeutic stage of alcohol treatment. Your experience in alcohol detox will depend upon our experience with alcohol and addiction: the longer you've been drinking heavily, the more likely you will need alcohol detox.
The term "alcohol detox" usually refers to the initial three to seven days after you enter alcohol treatment when your attention is focused on stabilizing you physically and getting the alcohol out of your system, but technically, you will continue flushing the toxins out of your body during your entire alcohol treatment program. Through organic meals, gentle exercise and alternative therapies like acupuncture and yoga, you continue to detox slowly throughout treatment.
Alcohol Withdrawal Without Treatment: Can You Go It Alone?
It is not recommended that anyone who experiences physical withdrawal symptoms when they stop drinking alcohol attempt alcohol detox alone. It rarely works and it can be incredibly unsafe, even deadly, in some cases. If you have underlying medical issues of which you are unaware, you may cause serious complications if you suddenly stop drinking without medical supervision and assistance. In other cases, the cravings for alcohol are simply too much to bear alone; most relapse within the first 36 hours. It is far better not to take the chance. If you or someone you love is addicted to alcohol, please find an alcohol treatment center to help you break free from your addiction rather than attempting to "go it alone."
