Kerrigan Could Face Manslaughter Charge

Mark Kerrigan abuses alcohol in father's deathAlcohol reportedly played a role in the fight that left Nancy Kerrigan's father dead. Will her brother face additional charges now that it was ruled manslaughter?

The death of figure skater Nancy Kerrigan's father, Daniel, has been officially ruled a homicide by the medical examiner, according to the Middlesex, Massachusetts district attorney's office.

Kerrigan's brother, Mark, is already in jail on charges of assault and battery against his 70-year-old father in an altercation that left the elderly man unresponsive. He was later pronounced dead. The fight was reportedly the result of an alcohol-fueled episode in which Mark became violent when his father wouldn't let him use the phone. Mark was living in the basement of his parent's Stoneham, Mass., home at the time.

The Kerrigan family issued a statement saying they were "extremely disappointed" in the medical examiner's ruling, calling it "premature and inaccurate" due to Daniel Kerrigan's pre-existing heart condition.

Mark has already pleaded not guilty to the charges stemming from the alleged assault. There is no word yet on whether new charges will be brought in relation to the medical examiner's ruling. This is not Mark's first brush with the law. He was recently released from a correctional facility and has been troubled since his service in the military, according to his lawyer. When police arrived at the Kerrigan home on the night of the incident he was reportedly intoxicated and combative, with pepper spray being used to subdue him.
