Outpatient Versus Inpatient Alcohol Treatment

Choosing between an outpatient alcohol treatment and an inpatient alcohol treatment is the first choice you will have to make as you seek out the best alcohol rehab for you. Each offers different benefits and, depending on your situation, one is certainly better than the other. However, either alcohol treatment is far better than no alcohol treatment at all.

The Canyon is an alcohol rehab in southern California just outside of Beverly Hills that provides both outpatient and inpatient alcohol treatment.

Outpatient Alcohol Treatment: Pros and Cons

Outpatient alcohol treatment is often the first choice for those who would prefer to avoid alcohol rehab completely. Because it allows you to return home each night, it appears to be less taxing. However, most outpatient alcohol addiction treatment programs require a relatively intense time commitment; few can maintain a 9 to 5 day job while attending all the required group therapy sessions, one on one therapy sessions, educational classes and more. If you are at all concerned about the temptation to drink overwhelming you while you are at home or away from your outpatient alcohol treatment program, then outpatient alcohol treatment is likely not the best choice for you.

Outpatient alcohol treatment is best for those who:

  • Are not physically addicted to alcohol
  • Have only struggled with alcohol abuse for a short period
  • Have already been through an inpatient alcohol rehab and have suffered only a minor to moderate relapse

Inpatient Alcohol Treatment: Pros and Cons

Inpatient alcohol treatment offers a complete immersion into your recovery, allowing you to pay attention to nothing but your own physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health. Without the pressures of family, relationships, and work, you are free to build a beneficial program of treatment that includes attending groups, trying out different alternative therapies, eating organic nutritional meals prepared according to your dietary needs, and avoiding the temptation of alcohol.

Inpatient alcohol treatment is best for those who:

  • Require 24-hour support in order to maintain sobriety in the first 30 days of treatment
  • Need medical attention or require a medical alcohol detox
  • Prefer to focus solely on their recovery without distraction

Outpatient Versus Inpatient Alcohol Treatment: Which One is Right for You?

If you have never attended an alcohol or drug rehab before, it is generally advised that you enroll in a program that is at least 30 days long on an inpatient basis. Research shows that you are more likely to succeed when you return home for a longer period without relapse and, should you relapse, experience only a short break from your sobriety if you go through an inpatient residential alcohol treatment. However, if you cannot afford inpatient treatment or if you are needed at work or at home and simply can't take the time away, it is far better to enroll in an outpatient treatment program. Outpatient treatment can be just as effective, but it requires that you employ a great deal of restraint in terms of cravings early on in your recovery.
