Caffeine & Alcohol = A Bad Combination

Caffeinated alcoholic drinks like Four Loko and Joose may be a thing of the past soon as the FDA prepares to ban the dangerous beverages popular with kids.
Whoever thought it was a good idea to combing caffeine and alcohol? Several beverage manufacturers did, but now the Food and Drug Administration is preparing to ban these caffeinated alcoholic drinks from the U.S. market, according to one senator. The FDA has been reviewing the drinks since 2009 and has yet to make a formal statement, but it doesn’t take a government agency to see that caffeine is an unsafe additive to alcoholic beverages.
"Let these rulings serve as a warning to anyone who tried to peddle dangerous and toxic brews to our children. Do it and we will shut you down," Senator Schumer, D-New York, said in a statement he released to the media.
Alcohol & Caffeine for Kids
Did he say “children”? Yes, the questionable combination of ingredients has made the beverages a hit with under-age drinkers and those barely above the legal limit. Popular brands like Four Loko and Joose have the effect of three cups of coffee mixed with three cans of beer. It’s no wonder they appeal to young consumers. However, that may change soon. Manufacturer of the beverages in question responded to Senator Schumer’s announcement by announced a plan to remove caffeine and other ingredients from its product.
Kids and teens already face greater health risks from drinking, due to the fact that their brains are still developing. Products like this only make drinking more appealing and the caffeine provides the energy to keep partying longer, leading to the danger of abuse.
