  • Drug Addition and Parenting Dangerous Lessons

Parenting is a rewarding but sometimes tough job. It requires good instincts, quick action, and a watchful eye. Some of the normal growing up steps that kids take can turn bad in the blink of an eye. So what if you are a parent with a drug addiction? Are you able to safely let them explore the world, or do you worry that you can’t give them the supervision they need?

    Teaching Your Children Positive Things

Let me just share a story that makes my point. During the last few weeks of school, my oldest daughter learned how to make her very first omelet. They finished up a unit on egg development and ended it by cooking this easy egg dish. My daughter is pretty spirited and confident, and she has seen me use the stove hundreds of times.

She asked me if she could try cooking an omelet since she knew how. I was hesitant at first, but a few days later I decided she could do it. I helped by chopping some ingredients, something she was still not allowed to do. I also turned on the burner because it was a little out of her reach, but she handled the hot pan from then on. She did a fine job and I was hovering over her every move.

Parents With Addiction Need Drug Treatment

Just imagine if you were in and out of being drunk, being high, or being gone. You may have remembered hearing about your daughter’s desire to try cooking an omelet on her own, but didn’t give permission for several weeks. Then, while you are out of it on the couch, she starts cooking her omelet on her own. She already knows she has to fend for herself a lot anyway, so she boldly goes ahead.

You can imagine a number of different possible outcomes after that. Unfortunately, your daughter already knows she can’t count on you and she doesn’t have your watchful eye over her activities. This scenario could easily happen when a parent is addicted to drugs. And if this is happening in your home, wouldn’t you rather be sober and able to carefully watch?

Drug Treatment Helps You Become A Sober Parent

Drug treatment can help you get sober so you can have a safe home for you and your children. Kids grow up fast, and time spent in drug rehab makes your parenting years clearer and more meaningful. And really, you
are missing not only the teaching moments but the loving affectionate moments, too. Parenting is a tough enough job anyway, and being addicted to drugs makes it all the more so. Drug treatment gives you the
chance to be the best parent you can be.
