- Alcohol Rehab at The Canyon
Choosing a California alcohol rehab can feel like a vast responsibility whether you are searching out the right facility for yourself or someone you love. Navigating the somewhat crowded waters of potential alcohol abuse and addiction treatment centers in California starts with a little bit of introspection. When you consider your needs for care, you can begin to create a list of therapies and treatments that will help you narrow your choices and find the right program for your needs.
According to a study published in Science, 1987 Apr 24;236(4800):410-6, there are at least two different types of alcoholism. The first type is characterized by early problem drinking before the age of 25, a number of impulsivity issues, and a number of family members who drink around them and drink heavily. The second type is characterized by later onset of problem drinking after the age of 25, a number of difficult personal issues in the patient’s life, and few instances of heavy drinking among family members (no genetic predisposition). Some argue that there are more subtypes, but in many alcohol rehabs, these two types can help the providers begin the process of planning a treatment program that will suit the needs of the individual.
The Canyon offers an alcohol detox and rehab in Peace Park, California, just outside Beverly Hills and Los Angeles, on a sprawling estate in the Santa Monica Mountains. Medical care and psychotherapeutic treatment are the primary focus, but here at The Canyon, we also provide a retreat from the rigors and pressures of everyday life as well as the freedom to focus on self and the issues that may have triggered and propelled drug addiction.
What to Expect
An effective alcohol rehab in California should be an all-inclusive treatment facility equipped to meet your psychological and physical medical needs associated with alcoholism and addiction as well as any co-occurring conditions. You should also expect to find evidence-based treatments and therapies provided by staff members on the cutting edge of their field in alcohol and drug abuse treatment. According to the National Institute on Drug Addiction (NIDA), effective treatment will include:
- Thorough evaluation. At the outset, a thorough evaluation for diagnostic purposes must be performed to identify co-occurring mental health issues as well as the presence of transmissible diseases like hepatitis C and HIV so that effective treatment can begin immediately.
- Detox. Your physical addiction to drugs and alcohol will be the first point of focus when you enter a California alcohol rehab center. Through a medical alcohol detox, you can break free from the need to drink every day and the physical withdrawal symptoms that begin whenever you try to stop drinking on your own. Your medical team may decide that medication is appropriate to ease some of your symptoms and make you more comfortable throughout the process. In other cases, physical addiction may not be an issue that lasts longer than a few days. Each case is individual and your experience will depend upon the length of your alcohol addiction, the amount of alcohol you drink each day and any co-occurring medical conditions you may have.
- Psychological addiction treatment. Treating your psychological addiction to alcohol will be the focus of the second phase of most of your program. Group therapy, personal therapy, family therapy, experiential therapy and alternative therapies all work together to create a comprehensive treatment plan.
- Personalized care. Through a variety of therapies and treatments, you can create a personalized and unique treatment program complete with treatment goals that are updated and adjusted as you achieve them.
- Multi-faceted treatment. Your stay in rehab should focus on your issues with alcohol but also provide you with care that addresses other problems that may be causing or compelling you to abuse alcohol. If there are legal issues, family problems, career issues, psychological disorders or medical ailments, these must be addressed. Additionally, treatment should be appropriate to your age, gender, culture and religion.
- Medication. In some but not all cases, medication may be an appropriate choice for those experiencing significant withdrawal symptoms
- Continually updated care. No matter what therapies are offered or the driving philosophy of the California alcohol rehab you choose, it is important that your treatment plan is continually monitored and updated according to your progress and changes in therapy.
- Treatment for co-occurring disorders. According to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, 1990 Nov 21;264(19):2511-8, 37 percent of those living with alcohol addiction also have a coexisting mental health disorder. If this is the case, Dual Diagnosis rehab treatment that addresses both issues is imperative.
- Relapse prevention. Alcoholism is characterized by chronic relapse so an effective alcohol rehab should teach the skills necessary to fight temptation and deal with inevitable triggers that can be a precursor to relapse.
Accessibility and Treatment Options
For many, the obstacle lies not in finding a California alcohol rehab with an open spot but in finding one that provides enough variety in therapeutic treatment options to ensure that an efficient and effective program may be experienced. There is a plethora of California alcohol rehabs across the state. But how many offer only a cookie cutter, one-size-fits-all treatment program that they expect to apply to every person, across the board? The answer is too many. At The Canyon, we offer a variety of treatment options ranging from the very traditional to the cutting edge so that each person who comes to stay with us can experiment and find the combination that speaks directly to his or her experience and needs in treatment.
Outpatient Rehab Programs in California
According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), outpatient or day treatment alcohol rehab programs offer you the ability to get medical treatment for your addiction to alcohol while allowing you to continue working and/or caring for dependent children and elders. Ideal for those who have been through alcohol rehab before and suffered a relapse or those who have not been abusing alcohol long enough to have developed a physical addiction, an outpatient California alcohol rehab program gives you the opportunity to maintain your ties to the community as you address the acute issues that are negatively affecting your chronic struggle with alcoholism.
Most of the core elements of effective treatment as defined by NCBI will be included in outpatient California alcohol rehab programs. These include:
- Screening
- Diagnostic assessment
- Crisis management
- In-depth treatment planning
- Medication assessment and planning
- Personal therapy
- Group therapy
- Educational classes for patients and family members
- Ongoing case management
- Random drug testing
- Program outcome evaluation
Inpatient Alcohol Addiction Treatment in California
Inpatient or residential alcohol rehab programs in California provide you with 24-hour, round-the-clock treatment and support, ideal for those who have never been to alcohol rehab before, those who are physically addicted to alcohol and require alcohol detox, and those who have suffered a long-term, significant relapse, according to NIDAMED. The benefit, beside the constant support, is the ability to leave behind temptations, stressful situations, and work- and/or relationship-related problems that often trigger addictive drinking. Inpatient alcohol treatment programs have the unique ability of being able to treat alcohol addiction on a physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual level.
In addition to the core elements of treatment listed above and found in most treatment programs, residential alcohol rehabs in California also offer a number of optimum and enhanced amenities to patients. These include:
- Family therapy
- Acupuncture
- Biofeedback
- Art therapy
- Stress reduction
- Psychodrama
- Recreational opportunities
- Continuing care
- Alumni meetings and support activities
- Community outreach
Continuing Care
When you have completed an alcohol rehab program, you have the option to continue with either off-site or on-site aftercare services or continued care. Off-site aftercare services often provide for a certain level of continued contact with therapists and counselors and/or group therapy or 12-step sessions, according to the US National Library of Medicine. These services are designed to provide patients with the opportunity to continue the growth they began during inpatient or outpatient treatment or to experience further development and progress. They also help to ease the transition for patients going from a rehabilitative environment back home. Some common continuing care services include:
- Case management
- Personal therapy
- Group therapy
- Family therapy
- Advocacy services
- Drug testing
- Recreational activities
- Field trips
- Liaison services
On-site continued care usually occurs in the form of sober living facilities in which you are invited to continue to live at the treatment center but with a much less rigorous therapeutic and treatment schedule. In the event that you choose sober living, the details of your schedule will be chosen by you and your therapeutic team, depending on your personal treatment goals.
Medications Appropriate for Alcohol Addiction Treatment
According to a study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry, 2010 June; 167(6): 630–639, there are a number of medications that may be used in the treatment of alcohol dependence and abuse. Some are designed to limit the withdrawal symptoms associated with alcohol detox while others help patients to experience fewer cravings so they can avoid relapse and focus on psychotherapeutic treatment. Some common medications that may be used include naltrexone, acamprosate, disulfiram, Ondansetron, topiramate, and baclofen. Some studies even report that pharmacological assistance can increase the effectiveness of psychotherapeutic treatment and help fight relapse.
For those diagnosed with a co-occurring disorder, medication may be a requirement. Depression, especially, is often an issue when alcoholism is diagnosed and treated. Among those diagnosed with a major depressive disorder, about 40 percent have problems with alcohol that require treatment, according to a study published in Archives of General Psychiatry, 2005 Oct;62(10):1097-106. In these cases, antidepressant medication can be helpful during alcohol addiction treatment.
Accreditation of Facilities and Personnel
Our medical and counseling staff here at The Canyon are fully accredited, master's level professionals who specialize in addiction treatment medicine and therapy. We have therapists on staff who can provide prescriptions for Dual Diagnosis and detox medications as needed, a characteristic that is rare among California alcohol rehab centers. We also have a number of staff members who specialize in certain aspects or therapies related to substance abuse treatment and Dual Diagnosis treatment, and they run the therapy groups that speak to their expertise.
Length of Alcohol Addiction Treatment
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the amount of time spent at an alcohol rehab can determine its effectiveness and the future success of the patient in recovery. There is no formulaic number that will be appropriate for each patient; rather the length of care should be determined by the type and degree of addiction issues and co-occurring mental health disorders. NIDA reports that most seeking treatment for a long-term alcohol dependency should spend at least three months in treatment in order to build a solid foundation for long-term recovery. Multiple episodes of treatment may be necessary for optimum results and the inclusion of relapse prevention, constant check-ins and monitoring of progress, and access to a combination of treatment and therapy options increases the chances for a successful abstinence.
Treatment Philosophy
Every alcohol rehab center in California has a philosophy – a way of viewing their treatment for addiction – and it is this philosophy that guides and informs their choices in terms of the therapeutic offerings they incorporate into their program. Taking the time to learn the underlying philosophy of a program can help you determine ahead of time whether or not you or your loved one will benefit from the structure and approach to treatment. If the philosophy and goals for treatment are not posted on their website, then speak with a counselor and discuss the details of what you can expect in terms of focus and tone at the program.
