Cocaine Addiction and Abuse Risks

Cocaine abusers become addicted to the drug for one reason only: the powerful and pleasurable initial effects or its "high." Euphoria, energy and feelings of power all come in the first few minutes of ingesting the drug, but after these effects wear off, the user is left with severe depression, anxiety and restlessness. Users also feel very sleepy once the high wears off and may sleep for days at a time. If they do not get another "fix" relatively quickly, they will experience severe (and painful) cocaine withdrawal symptoms. Cocaine is similar to caffeine in some of its effects, but it takes a much more powerful and addictive hold on the user, both physically and psychologically.

The Canyon is a drug and alcohol rehab center that provides patients with the resources they need to combat addiction be it alcohol, cocaine, marijuana, prescription painkillers or any combination thereof. We want to help you break free from the vicious cycle of alcohol or drug addiction and return to begin a normal, healthy life.

Cocaine Addiction Risks: Cocaine Addiction

There are many risks associated with becoming addicted to cocaine, but one of the biggest is the addiction itself. The constant desire and need for another fix and chasing the initial heights of that first high means that users will do anything in their power to obtain more of the drug. Cocaine addiction overwhelms all other needs, and some symptoms of addiction include: ignoring family and work responsibilities, weight loss, disappearance of personal effects (sold to obtain more cocaine), change in routines and a neglect of personal needs, such as food, hydration and hygiene.

Cocaine Addiction Risks: Cocaine Withdrawal

Cocaine withdrawal can occur quickly and after the very first use of the drug. As the drug addiction grows, time will make the symptoms worse and worse. Those who are addicted to cocaine will experience withdrawal symptoms if they do not take the drug on a regular basis, and fear of these symptoms is often enough to drive people to ramp up their use. Some cocaine withdrawal symptoms commonly experienced include fatigue, nausea and vomiting, anxiety, pain in the bones and muscles and anger/violence against friends of family members.

Cocaine Addiction Risks: Cocaine Overdose

Cocaine overdose can cause serious problems, and death is not an uncommon outcome. Depending on the severity of addiction, the amount of cocaine required to cause an overdose varies from person to person. The length of time the symptoms of overdose will last can vary as well. Due to the fact that cocaine is often combined with other drugs, cocaine overdose can easily happen even to an experienced user. Some of the major dangers of an overdose include cardiac arrest (heart attack), rise in body temperature, stroke, kidney failure and even death.
