Cocaine Addiction and Different Types of Treatment
The disease of cocaine addiction is one that can cause serious harm to cocaine users but is also a disease that is very treatable. Addiction is associated with an intense desire to obtain cocaine, regardless of the expense or requirements to get it. Many people will sell their personal possessions and steal from family or friends in order to fuel their addiction. Part of the reason for this is because of the positive feelings cocaine gives a user when it is first taken, and part of it is because they don't want to go through cocaine withdrawal, which involves an intense negative battery of emotions and feelings. Cocaine addiction can be treated, and depending on the level of addiction, may require more than one treatment or treatment type.
The Canyon is a drug and alcohol treatment center that provides patients who are suffering from cocaine addiction with customized, individual treatments designed to help them break free from their addiction and return to a happy, functional life.
Cocaine Addiction Treatment Options: Behavioral Treatment
Behavioral treatment encompasses a variety of treatment methods, all of which work on the patient to help modify their attitudes and behaviors so that they become less inclined towards drug abuse. Behavioral treatment also helps patients develop valuable life skills which they can put to good use once they have finished treatment. Some of the treatment programs include motivational interviews and incentives, family therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. Outpatient programs can be used for patients who have only taken drugs for a short period of time or who are not very addicted, but inpatient or residential programs should be considered for those who are either extremely addicted or have dropped out of treatment programs in the past. Inpatient programs allow patients to focus solely on breaking their cocaine addiction by providing them with a safe, healthy space free from temptations and distractions.
Cocaine Addiction Treatment Options: Medication
There are no drugs currently available that can provide an all-in-one solution to cocaine addiction, but for certain steps in the treatment process, medications can be of great value. In the detox stage, for example, patients will experience severe withdrawal symptoms as their body rids itself of cocaine, and medications can be prescribed to help with these symptoms. Antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs can help take the edge off of these withdrawal symptoms and make the first week off of cocaine less unpleasant. Beta-blocker antihypertensive drugs may also be prescribed to help lower the adrenaline levels in the patient's body, allowing them to remain calmer. There are risks with any medications, of course, and only a trained treatment specialist should prescribe and administer such medications.
