How Cocaine Addiction is Fueled in the United States
The main point of entry for drugs coming into the United States is the US/Mexico border. A recent intelligence assessment pegged the amount of cocaine coming over this border at around 65 percent of the total cocaine that is illegally smuggled into the United States. Organized groups and cartels control the smuggling, and ensure that the drug is available in all major cities across the country, using a sophisticated group of people and technologies to move it by sea, air and land.
The Canyon is a drug and alcohol rehab center that helps those who are suffering from addictions to drugs and alcohol. At The Canyon, your treatment will consist of a variety of traditional and nontraditional experiences, therapies and treatments, all designed to help you avoid relapse and build a new life for yourself when you return home.
Cocaine Addiction Fueled by Columbia
When cocaine is sent to the United States from Columbia, it usually has a specific destination. Operatives and smugglers who work for Columbian drug cartels oversee the drug throughout the distribution process, working in every major American city. Operating in cells to preserve their privacy and security, these smugglers are responsible for ensuring that the drug arrives safely at its destination. This allows the major drug smugglers in Columbia to distance themselves from the everyday operations, giving them some measure of safety from international laws. Columbian drug traffickers are now looking at extradition to the United States for drug-related crimes, even if they are committed in Columbia, due to a non-retroactive law that went into effect in 1997. By distancing themselves from the trafficking operations, the main drug lords hope to avoid extradition.
Cocaine Addiction Fueled by Mexico
Although Columbia has historically been the main drug importer to the United States, Mexico has begun to play a bigger role in the production and smuggling operations. Mexican drug smuggling groups were used successfully in the 1980s until, in 1989, 21 tons of cocaine were seized and a new set of arrangements took place between Mexican and Columbian smugglers. By allowing each other to have portions of the shipments and funds generated by the sale of the drugs, serious logistical problems were eliminated, and both sides were able to function much more efficiently.
Cocaine Addiction Fueled by Dominican Groups
Although Columbian groups still play the major role in drug trafficking into the United States, there are signs that other trafficking organizations are beginning to spring up in conjunction with the Columbian organizations. DEA reports from Philadelphia, Boston and New York City have shown that Dominican groups are beginning to play a large roles in drug smuggling and trafficking, alongside the established Columbian groups. In fact, with these two groups working together, they have been able to transport and distribute multiple kilograms of cocaine at a time.
