Cocaine Addiction in the United States
Cocaine addiction has reached almost epidemic proportions in the United States of America. A 1997 study found that nearly 1.5 million people regularly abuse cocaine, and it is estimated that 10 percent of the world's population has tried cocaine at least once in their lives. Every day in the United States, 5,000 people will try cocaine for the first time, which isn't surprising considering how many cocaine addicts there are here. Considering that there were only 30,000 new users of cocaine in 1975 and that in 2000 there were 361,000 new users, it is clear that cocaine is having quite a serious impact on the lives of those living in the United States.

Cocaine Addicts in the United States: The Trends
Cocaine use in the United States seems to follow trends of peaks and valleys. In 1997, there were around 1.5 million people addicted to cocaine. However, in 1985, there were 5.7 million users, which means that over a period of 12 years, cocaine use dropped by 4.2 million users. However, the number of current users (around 1.5 million) in the United States has not changed significantly since 1992, despite the drop from 1985 to 1997. However, all of these numbers are considered by some to be woefully understated, as the Office of National Drug Control Policy pegs the current number of cocaine addicts at around 3.6 million people.
Cocaine Addicts in the United States: Teens
Teen usage of cocaine in the United States is a problem, but trends show that usage among the teen demographic has not changed dramatically over the past two decades. The Monitoring the Future Survey, used every year to look at teen drug abuse and attitudes, has shown that - among certain grade levels of children - cocaine usage has increased a bit, but among others it has remained steady and unchanging
Cocaine Addicts in the United States: Headed to the Hospital
Cocaine has serious side effects, and can lead to complications and injuries that require immediate medical attention. Though users sometimes don't call for emergency care when incidents happen due to drug abuse, they often do and when that happens, statistics can be gathered and analyzed. Some of these statistics, gathered by the Drug Abuse Warning Network, have shown that emergency room visits related to cocaine usage increased between 1990 and 1994, but after that, remained steady through 1996.
