Crack Addiction
Crack, a refined and processed form of cocaine, is exceptionally addictive and dangerous to users due to its purity. Through a process called freebasing, cocaine is turned into a rock-like white substance called crack. The name is derived from the crackling noises that it makes when it is smoked. There is no need for special equipment to take crack, and most users smoke it with the aid of a glass pipe, a wire mesh screen and a heat source. It is most often sold in relatively small quantities in small bags or vials with enough of the substance for two to three uses.
The Canyon is a drug and alcohol rehab center that provides patients with the resources they need to successfully break their addiction to crack and cocaine with a comprehensive cocaine detox and cocaine rehab.
Crack Addiction: The Stats
Cocaine is generally converted into crack after it has been imported into the United States, and is relatively pure, consisting of 75 percent to 90 percent cocaine. It is sold in bags, vials and other small containers. Prices for crack depend largely on purity, and can range from $3 to as much as $50 for a single rock of crack, depending on how pure it is. Other factors effect the cost of crack, including how much is in use and available for sale in local markets and how much cocaine is available to turn into crack.
Crack Addiction: How it Began
Many years ago, in the 1970s, crack had a completely different image than it does today. In that time, it was considered a status symbol and was a drug that only the wealthy could afford. However, once crack started to become cheap enough for the average person to purchase, it quickly began a common street drug due to its potent effects and low price point. It is also more convenient than cocaine since it is easier to conceal and there isn't the need for expensive paraphernalia to smoke it.
Crack Addiction: How it Develops
Crack is an extremely powerful and potent drug and can cause addiction to set in after just one use. The general path an addict takes starts with that first hit, where they experience powerful pleasurable effects. The body then begins to form an addiction to the drug and undergoes withdrawal symptoms after the drug has worn off. Although moderate at first, these symptoms get worse as the person takes more crack, and the emotional and mental addictions begin to set in. Once fully addicted, a person cannot go without crack for very long and they will descend into a mental state that demands them to get crack on a regular basis, otherwise they will experience negative side effects. In an effort to get more of the drug, they may turn to selling personal effects, violence, theft and may even turn on family or friends to find money to purchase more of the drug.
