How is Crack Different From Cocaine?
Cocaine is a psycho stimulant drug that can be injected, inhaled or smoked. It has a direct effect on the brain, producing euphoric feelings of power and energy, and leaves the user with feelings of depression after the initial high has worn off. Crack, a different form of cocaine, is a chunky rock-like version of cocaine that can either be injected or smoked through a glass pipe. When crack is smoked, it has an almost immediate effect on the body and brain, causing a high as quickly as 10 seconds after it is smoked.
The Canyon is a drug and alcohol rehab center outside of Beverly Hills that will help you achieve a complete and holistic recovery from your addiction to drugs like crack and cocaine and help you find your way back to a healthy life free from drugs. Our dedicated staff of therapists and physicians are available around the clock to provide you with the support you need as you begin this difficult process.
Cocaine: The Basics
Cocaine, made from the leaves of the Erythroxylon Coca plant, is a very old and very powerful stimulant that works in the brain and causes feelings of euphoria, power and energy. Cocaine has been used in various forms for hundreds and thousands of years, and back in the 20th century, was used in a number of potions and elixirs that were sold to help people treat everything from the common cold to infections.
Crack: The Basics
Crack, or Crack Cocaine, earned its name from the noise it makes when being smoked (a "cracking" noise). It is formed through a freebase process, where cocaine is combined and cooked with baking soda to form white, powdery chunks or rocks that can then be smoked through the use of a pipe or bong. Crack, because it is primarily smoked, produces much more immediate and short-lived effects than snorting lines of cocaine, due to its quick absorption in the body.
Why Crack Instead of Cocaine or Cocaine Instead of Crack?
Cocaine, because it is more expensive than crack, offers the user a status symbol that crack does not have. Movies and television shows traditionally depict cocaine users as rich and sophisticated urbanites, while crack users are depicted as homeless or criminals living in ghettos (hence the differences between "coke heads" and "crack heads" in the media).
Crack, on the other hand, is less expensive initially (at least in the short term, before they are addicted and the bill for their habit begins to add up) and is available in convenient quantities, such as small bags or in vials, with two to three doses of the drug in each container.
