The Dangers of Crack Addiction

Crack, a concentrated form of cocaine, is very dangerous for a variety of reasons. Because it is generally smoked, the rapid absorption into the lungs moves the drug to the brain in a matter of seconds, giving the user a quick and intense high. However, this overwhelming, euphoric rush is accompanied by a high risk of overdose and poisoning, which can lead to serious health complications and even death. The high from crack dissipates after just a few minutes and leaves the user with feelings of intense depression and the urge for yet another dose of crack. Because this cycle of highs and lows is so fast and intense, crack addiction has the ability to set in faster than almost any other drug.

The Canyon is a drug and alcohol rehab facility that provides patients with the tools they need to break free from their addiction. We are an abstinence-based treatment center and provide you with a customizable drug addiction treatment program built to address your very personal and specific needs.

Physical Dangers of Crack Addiction

Crack (and cocaine, from which crack is derived) comes with many physical dangers that can cause serious injury or even death. Some of the physical risks of crack abuse and drug addiction include stroke, increased blood pressure, heart attack, a heightened risk of contracting HIV/AIDS or hepatitis C, and even death.

Psychological Dangers of Crack Addiction

Crack cocaine doesn't just affect users physically; it also affects them psychologically. A powerfully addictive substance, crack cocaine can affect people psychologically in the following ways:

  • Physical and auditory hallucinations
  • Depression and suicidal thoughts
  • Selling off personal effects to pay for the addiction
  • Seizures
  • Heart attacks
  • Psychosis and schizophrenic-like behavior and thoughts

If crack use continues for long any significant length of time, a severe case of psychosis may develop, leading to a state known as formication. In this state, people are under the illusion that there are insects or bugs crawling underneath their skin, a condition which can lead to violence or suicide. Additionally, if other drugs are combined with cocaine during the preparation of crack for sale, other side effects or poisoning can occur. Some of the more dangerous drugs often used to cut cocaine to make crack include benzocaine and procaine.
