Disappearing Dad
A father' careless actions due to addiction highlight the dangers for kids when those who should be watching out for them are lost in substance abuse.
We know addiction affects the children who are witness to it in those they love, but a shocking recent news story brought renewed attention to the problem.
Apopka, Florida police were recently called by a resident at the Palm Key Apartments after a 6-year-old neighbor appeared on their doorstep asking for food. It turns out that the boy had been left alone with his infant brother for more than four hours - with crack cocaine in plain view (and easy reach) of the kids.
Who left the children unattended? Their father, Bobby Lamaar Sims, 25, who has been arrested more than 30 times and is currently on probation for possession of cocaine.
The police immediately contacted Sims, but the disappearing dad refused to cooperate. Instead of showing remorse for his actions, Sims taunted the officers with questions like, "Well, did my child die?"
The children's mother is a corrections officer at the Juvenile Detention Center who said she had no idea about the drugs. She confirmed Sims was in charge of the kids and she has not been charged in the incident.
As a result of the incident, both children were taken to the hospital to be evaluated, and the Department of Children and Families is investigating.
