Long Term Effects of Cocaine Addiction
Cocaine addiction can set in quickly and it can be an extremely difficult habit to break. Because cocaine stimulates the pleasure and reward systems of the brain, it can induce a greater pleasure response than other naturally occurring rewards can provide. This feeling is psychologically addictive almost immediately, but a couple weeks of regular use and you'll find yourself physically addicted to the drug as well. This addiction can cause brain damage, as well as damage to other systems of the body, and break down your grasp on reality. In short, long-term addiction to cocaine is not something that is easily treated and requires inpatient residential drug rehab for the best shot at recovery.
The Canyon is both an inpatient and outpatient drug rehab facility that provides patients with the tools they need to break their addiction to cocaine and get back to a normal, healthy life. We are dedicated to helping you detox the drug out of your system and learn how to make different lifestyle choices and deal with the inevitable triggers that will invite relapse when you return home.
Long Term Effects of Cocaine Addiction
Cocaine in an incredibly powerful psycho stimulant, and due to its potency, it's impossible to predict how each new user's body will react to it. The stimulating and addictive effects of cocaine are thought to be caused by the drug blocking the body's re-absorption of dopamine during the pleasure/reward cycle in the brain. In this cycle, dopamine is released from specialized glands inside of the brain. It then travels through the brain to nerve cells that have dopamine receptors to process the dopamine and produce pleasurable effects and feelings in the person. When you take cocaine, it forces your body to release all of your stored dopamine at once but rather than allow the natural re-absorption of the chemical, cocaine blocks this part of the process which causes severe depression as well as other side effects like paranoia, hallucinations and irritable mood swings.
Long Term Effects of Cocaine Addiction: Physical Tolerance
Tolerance to cocaine will develop in users after a couple weeks of regular use. It is immediately noticeable in the fact that many people report that the high they experienced during the initial use is rarely replicated. This is an effect of a physical tolerance to the drug: when you need more and more cocaine and still don't experience the same intense high you felt the first time around. Unfortunately, despite the lack of an intense high, these larger doses can still lead to overdose, stroke and death.
Long Term Effects of Cocaine Addiction: Binge Abuse is Just as Harmful as Regular Abuse
Binge use of large amounts of cocaine creates side effects that are just as disturbing as regular use of the drug. Acute paranoid psychosis, in which you lose touch with reality and experience both auditory and physical hallucinations, is one of these as are physical effects with long-term results like stroke and cardiac arrest.
