The Physical Effects of Cocaine Addiction
Because of the mounting medical evidence pointing to cocaine's deleterious effects on the body along with the increasing prevalence of cocaine in society, the government and the public in general have become more concerned with the increasing use of cocaine. For many people, cocaine addiction is one of the biggest drug problems in America.
The Canyon is a drug and alcohol rehab center that provides you with the tools you need to break your addictions to any drug, including cocaine, and achieve long-lasting abstinence. Through a variety of traditional and nontraditional treatments and therapies, The Canyon is able to help you make the journey from cocaine addiction to rehabilitation, providing you with an opportunity for real success, one that you won't find anywhere else or on your own.
Effects of Cocaine Addiction: Physical Symptoms
Cocaine has many side effects in the body, not the least of which is an increased risk for sudden heart attack and strokes, even in people who would otherwise not be at risk. Because cocaine restricts and narrows the blood vessels, even healthy people can be at risk for these life threatening problems. Some other physical effects that cocaine can have on the body include (but are certainly not limited to):
- Increased blood pressure
- Increased breathing and heart rates
- Nausea and vomiting
- Anxiety and paranoia
- Insomnia and irritability
- Convulsions or seizures
- Loss of appetite and dangerous weight loss
- Cold sweats
- Nose bleeds and nasal passage damage
- Lung damage
Physical Effects of Cocaine Addiction: Health
Although the public is relatively informed about high-profile deaths resulting from cocaine use, many people still do not realize that it is an addictive drug, and many don't consider it to be as harmful as other illegal drugs. However, this couldn't be further from the truth. In fact, some of cocaine's immediate effects include an increased blood pressure, breathing rate and body temperature, all of which can quickly turn into cardiac arrest or a heart attack. When cocaine constricts the coronary arteries, the body's blood pressure rises and the heart experiences a loss in blood supply. This can cause long-term damage to the heart, which can result in immediate effects (such as heart attack or stroke) or long-term damage, such as heart disease or cardiovascular problems.
Additionally, when people inject the drug, they risk exposing themselves to diseases such as HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C, which can be transmitted through the repeated use of dirty or shared needles. Additionally, if the user is taking any other drugs, whether illicit or legal, there may be allergic or other negative reactions in their body.
