Short Term Effects of Cocaine Abuse
Addiction to cocaine can happen quickly and without warning, and often occurs after the first use of the drug. Cocaine is so addictive that, in animal studies, laboratory mice chose cocaine over food, water and sleep, even when consuming the drug meant great physical labor and punishment. Unfortunately, even short-term cocaine usage can lead to serious health and psychological issues and death by overdose. Although physical dependency takes only about two weeks to develop, psychological dependence can begin with the first line.
The Canyon is a drug and alcohol rehab facility dedicated to providing individuals with quality therapy, care and treatment to help them break their addictions to cocaine. Through our unique set of conventional and unconventional treatment options, our staff of therapists, counselors and medical professionals at The Canyon can help you with all aspects of your cocaine addiction treatment.
Short Term Effects of Cocaine Abuse: Symptoms of Use
The effects of cocaine abuse can show up almost instantly after the drug is taken (as few as 10 seconds in some cases) and will generally last from a few minutes to a few hours at most, depending on the quantity, purity and amount of cocaine. The immediate effects of cocaine include feelings of euphoria, power, energy and a decrease in hunger. Cocaine will also dilate your pupils and increase your heart rate and blood pressure, which can put stress on the cardiovascular system and potentially lead to a stroke or heart attack. The length of time that these effects remain active depends largely on how the drug was ingested. In general, the quicker it is absorbed, the more intense the feelings will be, the shorter the duration of the feelings, and the more intense the withdrawal when the high wears off.
Short Term Effects of Cocaine Abuse: Physiological Effects
In the short-term, physical and physiological effects of cocaine include dilated pupils, increased heart rate, constricted blood vessels and an increase in blood pressure. Large doses of cocaine can create the same feelings and effects even more intensely, but sometimes the opposite occurs and large quantities of the drug can lead to erratic and violent behavior. A single large dose can also create other negative effects that include muscle twitching, paranoia, vertigo and even toxic reactions. Sudden death can also occur, especially if cocaine is combined with alcohol. Unfortunately, experimental users are not immune to these severe effects as any of them can and do occur with the first use of the drug.
Short Term Effects of Cocaine Abuse: Neurological and Behavioral Effects
Cocaine can also have negative neurological and behavioral effects on those who take it, the severity of which depends upon the dosage or the level of drug addiction. Some of these effects include insomnia, depression, headaches and problems moving.
