Signs of Cocaine Abuse
Cocaine addiction has numerous signs. As a central nervous system stimulant that is very potent, cocaine has extremely powerful euphoric effects and is very addictive. Addiction can set in after a very short period of use, and individuals who use it even a few times generally become addicted. It is a white crystalline, powdery or granular substance, having a saline taste that is bitter and numbs the tongue and lips. While some users find that the drug enables them to perform physical and mental tasks more quickly, others experience the opposite effect.
The Canyon provides a cocaine detox and treatment that helps patients who are addicted to the drug recover from their addiction and go on to lead normal healthy lives. Trained and certified substance abuse treatment specialists and physicians are on staff with the tools you need to break your cocaine addiction.
The Short-Term Effects of Cocaine Abuse
The effects of cocaine are immediate and enjoyable, but brief. Cocaine produces a short but intense burst of euphoria and can make users feel more energetic and talkative. Cocaine is like caffeine in that it helps promote wakefulness in users while toning down feelings of hunger. Psychological effects of cocaine usage include feelings of well-being, a sense of power, anxiety and restlessness. As the drug wears off, these sensations are replaced by intense depression after which the user will "crash" and become lethargic, typically wanting to sleep for days at a time. These effects are more intense when cocaine usage is stopped, and can include other effects such as fatigue, listlessness, anxiety, irritability, sleepiness and paranoia.
Physical Signs of Cocaine Abuse
There are a variety of common physical signs of cocaine addiction. Some, but not all, of these include the following:
- Bloodshot eyes
- Loss of weight
- Runny nose
- Increased illnesses
- Increase in blood pressure
- Dilated pupils
- Increase in heart rate
- Increase in temperature
- Nosebleeds
- Nausea and/or vomiting
Emotional Signs of Cocaine Abuse
There are also emotional signs of cocaine abuse, and these can include the following:
- Change in eating patterns
- Change in sleeping patterns
- Change in social circle
- Change in behavior
- Frequently in need of money
- Unusually excessive bursts of energy followed by excessive sleeping
- Depression
- Missed work
- Increase in time spent away from family
- Hallucinations
- Speaking rapidly
- Paranoid thoughts or mental state
Cocaine Withdrawal Symptoms: A Sign of Cocaine Abuse
If a person does not use cocaine and then develops withdrawal symptoms, this is a huge indicator of cocaine abuse and addiction. These symptoms include:
- Depression
- Fatigue
- Vivid and bad dreams
- Increase in appetite
- Intense cocaine cravings
- Agitation
