Crystal methamphetamine-also known as crystal meth, crystal or meth-is a highly potent stimulant. It is most often smoked but it can also be snorted or dissolved in water and injected. All forms of crystal meth use are highly addictive. Part of the danger comes from the fact that it is usually manufactured by amateurs in their kitchens using chemicals of all kinds. The combination of crystal meth with other drugs and alcohol can be fatal and overdose is common. It takes only a few uses to develop a craving for the drug and, if those cravings are indulged, addiction is quick to follow. The destruction to the skin, internal organs, teeth and hair is visible within weeks of initial use and problems with logical thought processes, memory and coordinated movements develop over long-term use.
Meth has an intense and immediate effect when it is first smoked or injected called a rush. Snorting lines results in a longer lasting euphoria but no intense feelings. The incredible agitation that follows, however, can be overwhelming and incites some to violent, paranoid behavior. Low appetite and inability to sleep, panic and anxiety are also common. Too much or too long without sleep and continued use can cause seizures, heart attack and death.
Addiction happens after only a few uses with meth. In fact, some report a craving for the drug after only one hit. Devastating physical effects from extended use can begin to show within just a few months. Rotting teeth, too rapid weight loss, sallow skin and losing hair are all common. The drug is well-known for aging its victims. The compulsive behavior associated with the drug can last long after the last hit causing paranoia like imagined insects beneath the skin or delusions of being followed. Full blown psychosis is common, as are strokes and death.
Crystal meth affects the brain's reward system or the part of the brain responsible for natural feelings of calm and content. Ordinarily, it stimulates itself to produce the chemicals that create happy feelings naturally. However, crystal meth tricks the brain into chemically producing the feeling of happiness (the rush or euphoric feeling) without notifying those stimulators. With continued use, the natural ability to stimulate these happy feelings shuts down and the user is no longer able to feel good without the drug. Chronic depression is a common problem after using crystal meth.
