Methamphetamine Addiction and Crystal Meth Labs

The trafficking and production of meth is unique because meth is dangerous from conception (when it is just separate chemicals) to finish (the final, crystalline powder). People without training who manufacturer it in illegal "labs" can cause explosions, fires or spills that can injure or kill themselves and other people who might be nearby. The chemicals and solvents that are used to create meth can enter a person's central nervous system and cause neural damage, liver damage and kidney damage. These same chemicals can also irritate other parts of the body, such as the eyes, skin and nose.

The Canyon provides rehab for people suffering from meth addiction. Through a variety of traditional and nontraditional treatments, The Canyon's staff and therapists help patients break free from their addiction and achieve long-lasting abstinence. You can be free of your addictions, and The Canyon can help.

Methamphetamine Addiction and Crystal Meth Labs: Environmental Effects

Every pound of meth that is produced also produces five to six pounds of toxic waste in its wake. Meth manufacturers often pour the leftover meth-making chemicals down sink drains, storm drains or even directly onto or into the ground. Solvents and other toxic chemicals that are used to make meth are very hazardous to the environment because they don't just dissolve; they stay in the soil and groundwater for years. Clean up costs can be astronomical because contaminated soil must usually be burned in order to clean it.

Methamphetamine Addiction and Crystal Meth Labs: Legal Consequences

The cleanup of meth labs is a very time and cost intensive process, and goes beyond the capabilities of most local jurisdictions. The average cleanup cost is around $5,000, but can go as high as $150,000. The mandatory minimum sentences under for operating a meth lab depend on the amount of meth found at the lab, and are five years in prison for 10 grams found (pure meth) and 10 years for 100 grams found (again, of pure meth). The Comprehensive Methamphetamine Control Act of 1996 was legislation designed to take steps toward preventing meth from blossoming into another drug abuse crisis, like cocaine or marijuana. The bill permits the following:

  • Domestic seizure and forfeiture of meth precursor chemicals
  • Directs the DA to coordinate international drug enforcement efforts to intercept such chemicals
  • Increases penalties for possession of meth-making equipment and trafficking in certain chemicals

Requires a task for to develop and implement prevention, education and meth treatment strategies

Methamphetamine Addiction and Crystal Meth Labs: What to Look For

If you suspect that there might be a crystal meth lab in your neighborhood, there are a few signs you can look for:

  • Unusually strong odors similar to fingernail polish remover or cat urine
  • Renters who pay in cash
  • Large amounts of antifreeze, cold medicines, drain cleaner, lantern fuel, batteries, duct tape and clear glass beakers and containers
  • Residences with lots of nighttime traffic and blacked out windows
