Drug Detox Treatment Options

When you take any drug of addiction regularly for any length of time, you become physically dependent upon that drug. Soon, a tolerance to your drug of choice kicks in, which means that you must take more and more of the drug in order to feel the pleasurable euphoric effects. Should you try to stop taking the drug completely-even if you just miss or are late taking your regular dose-you will experience physical withdrawal symptoms associated with drug detox. A necessary part of breaking your drug addiction, there is only one safe way to go through drug detox: under the supervision of a medical detox center like The Canyon.

The Canyon is a California drug detox that provides for multiple drug detox options. With the guidance of your medical team, you and your doctors can determine which drug detox option is right for you.

Cold Turkey Drug Detox

When you stop taking your drug of choice without warning-that is, without tapering down or in any way preparing your body for the shock-it is called a "cold turkey detox." A cold turkey detox is a physically devastating experience. Without any medication to act as a buffer between you and the pain, you will experience headaches, sweating, nausea and vomiting, bone pains, muscle aches, leg twitches, anxiety, depression, irritability, fatigue, insomnia and more. These symptoms begin a few hours after your missed dose and continue to intensify over the next three days. They should then peak and linger.

Few can make it through a cold turkey detox alone without relapsing. With medical and psychological support at a drug detox center, you not only increase your chances of making it through without relapsing and actually breaking your drug addiction but also doing so safely, without any dangerous medical emergencies.

Maintenance Drug Detox

A maintenance drug detox is an option for those who struggle with addiction to opiate drugs like prescription painkillers and heroin. Because simply stopping your intake of an opiate drug at a high dose can be deadly, especially when there are co-occurring medical conditions, and because so few make it through a cold turkey opiate detox without relapsing, there is a maintenance option. Though you still stop taking your drug of choice immediately, you replace it with a less addictive opiate that is easier to control and then step down your dose slowly over time. Either buprenorphine, in the form of Subutex and Suboxone, or methadone are the maintenance opiate detox medications of choice. They mimic the action of your opiate drug of choice in the brain so that you don't experience withdrawal symptoms or do so only minimally. This allows you to more quickly begin drug addiction treatment as you slowly lower your maintenance medication dose over time until you are drug free.

Drug Detox Treatment

Another form of drug detox occurs when you stop taking your drug of choice and allow the doctor at your drug detox facility to prescribe you medications to treat each individual withdrawal symptom. That is, you'll take one medication if you experience headaches, another if you're struggling with nausea, et cetera until you can rest and get through the worst of your drug withdrawal symptoms. As your withdrawal symptoms subside, you can begin to focus on behavioral therapies and cognitive therapeutic treatment as you continue with a slow and steady detox throughout the rest of your stay at drug rehab.
