Helping a Family Member Through Drug Detox

Drug detox can seem like the most difficult part of drug rehab. Because it is the first step and intensely physical, the experience can feel overwhelming to your loved one. In fact, a great many who drop out of drug treatment do so during the initial drug detox phase. Even though your family member must choose to get clean and sober for him or herself and must do it alone, you can help by showing your support every step of the way, including during drug detox.

At The Canyon, we offer an holistic drug detox as a part of our drug rehab program.

Helping a Family Member Through Drug Detox: Before

When your family member is preparing to head to drug detox-after he or she has decided to go-their feeling may be one of trepidation. He or she may even consider not going if they take too long to actually get to the facility after making the decision to go. For your part, you can help by supporting their positive decision to take this leap into recovery. Don't cater to any talk of putting it off or any rationalization that perhaps they don't need detox right now. Instead, make sure they know how proud you are of their decision to go, your faith that it will go well and assure them that you will be at home waiting for them and supporting them should they need anything at all.

Helping a Family Member Through Drug Detox: During

Because drug detox is the first step in any comprehensive drug rehab and because it can be an intense experience, most drug rehab facilities will not allow your family member to contact you or anyone else for the first few days or weeks. This is called a 'blackout period,' and though it may be difficult, it is not uncommon and can be very helpful in that it allows your family member to focus on him or herself and not external issues or relationships. Letters may be allowed, so feel free to write if you want to. Remember to keep it positive and supportive and avoid talking about problems at home, but do tell them funny stories and anecdotes. They may not receive your letters right away depending upon the policy at the program you choose, but when they do, it will certainly lift their spirits.

Helping a Family Member Through Drug Detox: After

When your family member completes drug detox, it is recommended that he or she immediately follow up with drug addiction treatment. Inpatient treatment is recommended after drug detox in order to minimize exposure to illegal drugs and alcohol. Though you may miss your family member and want them home, it is important to support them as they continue the good work they started during detox and strengthen their recovery so that it can last when they return home.
