Heroin Detox

Heroin, a very powerful and addictive drug, is created by processing and concentrating morphine, made from opium poppy plants. It is usually in a powdered form, white/yellow/brown in color and can be taken by intravenous injection or by snorting. While the short-term effects of heroin are pleasant and include things like euphoria and pleasurable feelings, long-term use can lead to serious health risks such as liver disease, lung disease, heart disease and strokes.

If you're suffering from the effects of heroin addiction, The Canyon is here to help. We offer a broad range of treatments, from detox to aftercare and everything in between. So if you or a loved one is suffering from heroin addiction and is in need of a heroin detox, contact us at The Canyon.

Detox: The Basics

Detoxification, or detox, is the first step in any successful drug addiction treatment program. It involves cleansing the body of harmful toxins and chemicals that are created by taking heroin. During the detox process, withdrawal symptoms can be severe, and are usually managed with the help of medications or other treatments. Withdrawal symptoms can include things like cramps, depression, muscle pain, vomiting, nausea and diarrhea. Not all types of drugs, such as cocaine and marijuana, require a medically-based detox approach, but opiates such as morphine and heroin definitely do.

Heroin Detox: The Basics

As was previously mentioned, opiate detox requires a medically-based treatment because of the withdrawal symptoms as well as the possibility of co-occurring medical conditions that could complicate the detox process. These symptoms are usually severe and can include things like seizures, strokes, heart problems and difficulty sleeping, and can last for several days, usually topping out around two to three days after the last dose was taken. When going through detox for heroin addiction, patients are continuously monitored in a treatment center so that if any abnormalities surface during withdrawal, they can be immediately addressed. Additionally, medications may be prescribed and administered in order to help take the edge off of the symptoms.

Heroin Detox: A New Horizon

In the year 2000, a major new shift occurred in the treatment of opiate addiction, which includes the treatment of heroin addiction. A new law was passed that expanded the ability of certified doctors and treatment centers to begin prescribing a medication called buprenorphine (commercially known as Suboxone or Subutex) to treat narcotics addictions outside of a drug rehab facility. Previously, the only places that were allowed to administer medications were approved methadone clinics or drug rehab centers. This new medication and its unique regulations allow for an effective medical heroin detox on an inpatient and outpatient basis.
