Teen Drug Detox

Teen drug detox is a valuable resource for parents and teenagers struggling with drug addiction. Recognizing the issue can be heartbreaking but taking steps to solve the problem is the most liberating choice you can make. If your loved one is struggling with substance abuse and is in need of a teen drug detox, please don't wait.

At The Canyon, we provide comprehensive teen alcohol and drug rehab programs for young people between the ages of 18 - 21. The Canyon does not treat individuals under the age of 18.

For teens and older adolescents who need alcohol or drug treatment, our teen drug detox program is the first step. Programs at The Canyon can be customized to address the challenges associated with this fiercely development stage of life - and our experts are well-versed in the addiction-related topics and concerns that are most important to the age group.

Teen Drug Detox: The Basics

A teen drug detox provides all the same amenities that an adult-oriented drug detox provides but with a focus on the physical and emotional differences inherent to teens and older adolescents. Detox is essentially a physical process that focuses on the body's dependence upon drugs and/ or alcohol. Though counselors are available and a client will have all the emotional support he or she needs, drug detox is considered the initial phase of treatment and during this phase, ensuring the young person's physical and medical safety is the priority.

Your Child and Teen Drug Detox: When It's Necessary

If your teen is using drugs of addiction like cocaine, heroin, prescription painkillers, marijuana or alcohol on a regular basis, he or she may be physically dependent upon the drugs in question. One way to tell is to watch what happens when the teen is without the drug of choice. Physical withdrawal symptoms will manifest in just a few hours after the last missed dose and continue to increase in intensity as the hours and days pass. The specific withdrawal symptoms will vary depending upon your teen's drug of choice but they may include sweating, nausea or vomiting, intense fatigue, and irritability.

Also, if you find paraphernalia or the actual drugs and you know that your child is using regularly, chances are that he or she is physically addicted and detoxification is necessary.

How To Get Your Child Into Teen Drug Detox

Broaching the subject of drug addiction in general is a difficult thing to do with any young people. Asking about their activities specifically in regards to drug use and especially if you suspect that they are actively using drugs can be an overwhelmingly emotional experience. In some instances, you may choose to do a teen intervention and have a team waiting for them at The Canyon upon the intervention's completion. In other instances, just talking to your child will be enough or putting them in the car and taking them to the facility. If the teen is over 18, independence issues often arise as well.

It is important to work with a program that understands the long-term needs of the late-teen or adolescent. Peer pressure and unique life-challenges make this a particularly difficult time to maintain sobriety, so it is important to work with professionals who understand this stage of life and how it relates to addiction.
