Drug Addiction and the Family
It is a well-documented fact: if your mother or father or even your grandparents struggled with drug or alcohol addiction then it is more likely that you, too, will develop an addiction to drugs and alcohol should you choose to use them casually. New research has come about to further clarify this assumption: doctors have identified a common gene among family members who suffer from drug addiction. At The Canyon, our staff members keep up with the latest research to provide our clients with the most cutting edge substance abuse treatment available.
Drug Addiction and the Family Linked
Based on data from one of the largest studies of its kind, Yale School of Medicine researchers have found a genetic linkage in individuals who are blood relations for dependence on opiates like Vicodin, Oxycontin, heroin and other opioid-based prescription medications. From a sample of 393 small families with at least two opioid dependent individuals, they searched out the genetic signposts-shared marker alleles and gene variants-that showed a link between the drug users in the family.
The Canyon is staffed with psychiatrists at the top of their field as well as substance abuse professionals who all work together to provide you or your family members who struggle with addiction with the best possible drug addiction treatment possible.
Drug Addiction and the Family: Twin Studies
Heredity and genetics and their effect on drug addiction have also been researched using twins. Harvard Medical studied 352 pairs of identical male twins and 255 pairs of fraternal male twins to find out how they responded to drug use. By comparing their reactions, they determined that genetic makeup heavily influenced their reaction to drugs and, by extension, their predilection for addiction.
At The Canyon, we recognize that drug addiction is a physical disease with roots in both genetic and environmental circumstances. We work hard to make sure that your treatment plan is highly individualized to help you overcome your own particular issues and find solid ground despite genetic predisposition.
