Drug Addiction and Narcotics Anonymous
Narcotics Anonymous (NA) is one of the world's largest member-run and member-funded recovery/support groups. Their sole purpose is to provide safe space where addicts can talk to each other about their experiences in recovery. There are no counselors, residential facilities, vocational training, or medical services. No dues are required for membership, and anyone can join.
The Canyon combines the proven techniques of NA's methodology, meeting style, and twelve-step program with holistic healing therapies and organic nutrition. The benefit: new patterns and healthy choices that can be seamlessly integrated into your life after rehab.
The History of Narcotics Anonymous and Its Relationship to Drug Addiction
Narcotics Anonymous (NA) was founded in the late 1940's on the 12-step model of Alcoholics Anonymous, substituting the term "addiction" in place of "alcohol." The concept spread to major cities across the US and finally overseas to Australia in the early 1970's. NA books and pamphlets began appearing in the 80's and soon after, 8 other international groups had formed. Today, NA can be found on almost every continent and literature is available in over 34 languages. For almost 60 years, NA has been supporting addicts worldwide through the process of recovery.
The Narcotics Anonymous Program and Its Stand On Drug Addiction
One of the first pamphlets published, referred to as "the White Booklet," explains the point of the program: "NA is a nonprofit fellowship or society of men and women for whom drugs had become a major problem. We meet regularly to help each other stay clean. We are not interested in what or how much you used, but only in what you want to do about your problem and how we can help."
Their support network and recovery process is top-notch, promoting abstinence from drugs and alcohol by way of the Twelve Steps to Sobriety. The key principles of which include:
- Admitting that you have a problem
- Reaching out for help
- Making amends for the harm you've caused
- Sponsoring other addicts who need help through the recovery process
Those Who Seek Help Through Narcotics Anonymous For Drug Addiction
Every economic, cultural, and religious affiliation are represented in the membership at large. Men and women, young and old who have abstained from drugs from less than 1 year to over 40 years can be found at NA meetings. In keeping true to form, no personal information is collected, and no record of attendance is kept so that all members remain truly anonymous.
