Mario’s Arrest Linked to Mom’s Addiction?
The recent arrest of the R&B singer for assault is allegedly tied to his mother’s struggle with addiction.
R&B singer Mario was arrested recently for allegedly assaulting his mother, but his lawyer is calling the altercation "an unfortunate incident between a loving son and a mother who continues to struggle with a devastating addiction," according to CNN.com.
The 24-year-old crooner was charged with second-degree assault after police responded to a report of "a mental case breaking up property” inside an apartment building. Mario’s mother, Shawntia Hardaway, met officers in the lobby of the Baltimore, Maryland high-rise apartment complex, and alleged that her son was the one "throwing and damaging property," according to the police report.
Hassan Murphy, Mario's Baltimore attorney, said, "despite the allegations, Mario remains committed to supporting his mother,” adding, “Anyone who has waged the battle to save loved ones from the forces of drugs knows the irrational behavior that almost always accompanies their actions.”
According to Hardaway, her son "started yelling at her and he used his hands and forearms and pushed her in the chest and shoulder area causing minor pain and discomfort," according to the police report. When officers entered the residence, they found a severely damaged china cabinet, a broken mirror and door and a lot of broken glass lying on the floor.
Police arrested Mario (born Mario Barrett) and booked him on a second-degree assault charge, following Hardaway’s claim that she feared for her life. It’s not the first time the private relationship of this mother and son has been made public. An award-winning 2007 TV documentary in 2007 titled I Won't Love You to Death: The Story of Mario and His Mom documented his struggle to help his heroin-addicted mother.
