Sorkin Still Struggles
The award-winning writer behind hit TV shows and films, Aaron Sorkin, tells W magazine that saying “no” to cocaine is still hard.
Despite the pressure of writing award-winning TV shows including The West Wing and scripting films like A Few Good Men and The American President and the upcoming Facebook film, The Social Network, Aaron Sorkin says that saying “no” to cocaine is the hardest thing he has ever done. In fact, it’s the hardest thing he continues to do to this day.
Sorkin Tells about Drug Addiction
Sorkin, a Syracuse grad and lawyer’s son, is obviously well educated, but his intelligence and talent couldn’t keep him from becoming a crack addict. In a recent interview with W magazine, he talked about his past drug addiction, including a period of time where lived at the Four Seasons hotel and worked through the night writing, fueled by drugs.
“I had what they call a ‘high bottom,’” Sorkin explained to W. “My life didn’t fall apart before I got into rehab. I didn’t lose my job or run over a kid or injure anyone when I was high. But the hardest thing I do every day is not take cocaine.”
Despite his skepticism, Sorkin went into treatment in 1995. “I had no intention of rehab working,” he recalled. “But I’ve never seen anything work as well.”
Sorkin’s Past Relapse
There was a well-publicized relapse in 2001, when Sorkin was arrested at the airport after security found a pipe, cocaine and hallucinogenic mushrooms in his bag. That was a humbling experience that reminded him that recovery is a life-long process. “You don’t get cured of addiction—you’re just in remission,” he told W.
