Submarines Help Smuggle Drugs

Submarines Help Smuggle Drugs“Narco-subs” are the latest in drug trafficking technology, representing a new threat to the U.S. war on drugs.

Is a submarine the latest mode of transportation being used to bring illegal drugs into the U.S.? A report by Brooklyn-based VBS.TV says it’s true. In an attempt to circumvent the military checkpoints in Colombia, barriers funded by billions in U.S. aid that dates back to the Clinton Administration, the ever-creative drug traffickers are turning to something called a “narco-sub.”

Drug Submarines

According to VBS.TV, the Colombian navy said some cartels are allocating increasing resources to the development of new smuggling technology, eager to find cutting edge ways to continue to get their drugs to the international market. The Colombian navy has already intercepted a few of these “drug submarines” and says they resemble speedboats with their roofs removed. In fact, VBS.TV says, “most of them aren't engineered to be fully submersible.” Subs or not, that doesn’t mean they aren’t able to successfully carry millions of dollars of illicit cargo into the U.S. and other countries.

There’s no way of knowing just how many of the narco-subs exist or how long they will remain the mode of choice for transporting drugs. One thing is clear: There will always be a new idea in line to take over once this runs its course.
