Understanding Addiction and Physical Dependency

Addiction to drugs and alcohol can be defined as an unhealthy obsession with obtaining and consuming the substance of addiction. Addiction creates a drive in a person that causes them to seek out the addictive substance first and foremost, choosing the drug above anything and everyone else in their life. Their priorities shift from their family, friends and career to getting their next fix. Addiction becomes physical once your body begins undergoing withdrawal symptoms and/or you physically crave more of the substance. Eventually, a person will build up a tolerance to their drug of choice, and their body will exhibit extreme withdrawal symptoms if they try to stop or go without a dose for any length of time.

At The Canyon, we can help treat your addiction and get your life back on track. Our treatment programs and therapies options are designed to help you break the cycle of addiction efficiently and safely with an eye toward returning home a more stable and happier person.

Types of Addiction and Physical Dependency

Both alcohol and drugs can cause physical dependency and addiction in people who abuse them. Alcohol addiction, or alcoholism, is the number one addiction problem in the world. In fact, in the United States alone, over 13 percent of the adult population will become alcoholics at some point in their life. Alcoholism is an addiction to alcohol that takes control of a person's life and causes them to drink constantly and can cause them to neglect all other areas of their life to support their alcohol habit.

Drug addiction can come in many forms and may include an addiction to a combination of drugs including marijuana, cocaine, heroin, prescription drugs and more. Out of all of the possible drugs to become addicted to, cocaine is one of the most powerful, most addictive and most popular drugs across the United States and around the world.

The Individual, Addiction and Physical Dependency

Addiction to drugs or alcohol affects not only your life but the lives of those around you. They can affect your ability to work, go to school, interact with those around you and can impair your most basic functions. Similarly, relationships with others can be harmed and destroyed due to drug and alcohol use because you become so singly focused on obtaining more of the addictive substance and disregard everything else. The pressure of staying one step ahead of the addiction is a strain on you and those around you; it can tear lives apart and damage your future to the point where you can end up jobless and out of options. Addiction generally starts out as a way of dealing with problems, but it always causes more problems and never solves the original ones.
