Doing an Intervention Before Drug Rehab

When the cycle of addiction begins to spiral out of control, friends and family are desperate to do something - anything - to help. Understanding that drug abuse is a serious problem is the first step, and admitting that your loved one is struggling with this disease comes next. But then what? Convincing an addict that their behaviors are harmful and encouraging them to seek treatment often sparks a huge confrontation, leaving loved ones feeling helpless and confused.

The Canyon is here during this critical time to remind you that there is strength in numbers. Professional interventionists are on call to assist friends and family in organizing a compassionate confrontation to address your concerns with your loved one, even escorting them to the treatment facility if need be.

The Definition of a Drug Rehab Intervention

An intervention is a gathering of friends, family, and colleagues who use a candid, "tough-love" approach to explain the impact of the addict's actions. Personal stories are shared so that the addict can recognize specific situations in which their actions harmed their loved ones due to their drug and alcohol use. This is followed by the recommendation of a specific treatment option and the ultimatum that if treatment is not chosen immediately, serious consequences will result.

When a Drug Rehab Intervention Is Necessary

There are a number of signs that a drug rehab intervention is necessary. If your friend or loved one is causing (or threatening to cause) harm to self or others, an intervention is needed immediately. Neglect and abuse are top priority when determining when it is appropriate to get involved. The presence of health, legal and financial troubles are also cause for concern, but don't overlook the day-to-day issues like social isolation losing one's close relationships, home or employment.

How a Drug Rehab Intervention Works

Planning an intervention can be broken down into a few basic steps:

  • 1) Research the addiction, drug and treatment options.
  • 2) Enlist friends and family to write letters detailing how this problem is affecting them and their relationship with the user. Persuade the user to seek immediate treatment for the problem, and outline specific actions you will take if they refuse (divorce, loss of financial support, etc.).
  • 3) Arrange admission and transportation to the treatment facility, as well as the date, time, and location for the actual intervention.
  • 4) Assemble the cast of friends and family and bring the loved one to the location without revealing the reason.
  • 5) Read your letters aloud and present your treatment option.
  • 6) Escort your loved one directly to the treatment facility.

What a Professional Interventionist Does for a Drug Rehab Intervention

Experienced interventionists assist with organizing and coordinating an intervention from start to finish. They also act as referee, making sure that all parties are heard and respected. Definitely seek professional assistance if your loved one is suspected or known to suffer from mental illness, multiple addictions, suicidal behavior or violent/abusive tendencies. The Canyon can provide a professional interventionist to assist you in planning our intervention, mediate the event and escort your loved one to our treatment facility in Malibu, California.
