How Interventions Work
Drug rehab interventions are an extremely effective way to demonstrate to someone you love the depth and severity of their drug addiction and help them get the help they need before it's too late. These two things-identification of drug-addicted behavior and the offering of drug rehab as a solution-are the sole goals of a drug and alcohol intervention.
At The Canyon, we can help you by providing a professional interventionist to assist you through the intervention and a drug rehab for your loved one. Located just outside of Los Angeles in Peace Park, California, The Canyon is an holistic drug rehab that treats those in need of alcohol addiction treatment, drug addiction treatment or dual diagnosis treatment. Contact us today for more information.
How Interventions Work: The Driving Force of the Event
The purpose of an intervention must be apparent to its planner well before the day of the event. It's imperative that you understand an important concept long before the intervention gets underway: an intervention is not a judgment or an indictment of the person living with drug addiction. Despite the fact that the careless behavior of those addicted to drugs and alcohol have very real and painful emotional consequences for those who love him or her, it is important that the intervention not turn into a long blame session. Rather, the driving force of an intervention should be to say the most effective things in the most effective manner to elicit from your loved one the desire to enter drug rehab and receive medical treatment. Drug addiction is not a character flaw. It is a medical disease and as such requires medical treatment. Helping your loved one to understand that their drug addiction is something to take seriously and address immediately should be the motivation behind every choice you make for your drug addiction intervention.
How Interventions Work: Setting Goals and Consequences
Each person who attends the drug intervention will have a chance to share a personal experience they had with the subject of the intervention when that person was under the influence and behaving in a hurtful, unhealthy or unsafe manner. This will help achieve the first goal: illustrating for your loved one the serious and pervasive nature of their addiction to drugs and alcohol.
The second goal of a drug addiction intervention-getting your loved one into treatment-may only be achieved with a significant negative consequence should they refuse. This will be different for everyone. For some, a spouse may tell the subject of the intervention that he or she will file for divorce or ask for a separation. For others, roommates, housemates or live-in family members may tell their loved one that they will have to move out. For an intervention in which the subject is an employee, the consequence for refusing drug rehab may be losing their job.
Whatever you choose as the consequence for refusing drug rehab, it must be significant enough to get the attention of your loved one. It must also be something that you are prepared to follow through with in the event that your loved one chooses not to go into treatment.
How Interventions Work: After the Event
If your loved one chooses to enter drug rehab, you must be prepared to send them immediately. Not a few days later, not next week, not next month. You should have a place ready and waiting for your loved one immediately at the end of the intervention. You should have all travel arrangements made and a packed bag by the door. Waiting is not an option. Drug rehab must happen now.
Should your loved one choose not to enter drug rehab, you must be prepared to follow through on the consequences you outlined during the intervention. Backing down, offering more time or a second chance to get it right without drug rehab is not an option. Medical issues like drug addiction will only see recovery through medical treatment like drug rehab. Period.
