An intervention is a meeting of friends, family, peers and colleagues who come together to compassionately confront a loved one and persuade them to seek treatment for their addictive behaviors. How To Do a Drug Addiction Intervention: How It Works

Awareness of the problem and a desire to help are the motivating factors for most who deem it necessary to get involved and stage an intervention. From there, you'll need to research and learn as much as possible about the addiction and available treatment options. Gather support from key people in your loved one's life who are willing to participate by writing letters about their experience with the person since drugs and alcohol became a problem.

Emphasize your love and concern for you loved one when you write your letter, but don't hold back any details when it comes to discussing the effects of their harmful behaviors. Be sure to point out the physical, emotional and financial toll the addiction is having on you and them. Define the consequences if they refuse treatment (cutting off contact or financial support, moving out, divorce, etc).

Quietly make arrangements for transportation and admission to the treatment center, then schedule the intervention and invite your loved one without informing the person you intend to confront of the plan. Friends and family will read their letters aloud and encourage their loved one to enroll immediately in treatment.

  • 1) Take as much time as you need to plan your approach, educate yourself about the problem and coordinate with everyone involved.
  • 2) Practice as a group. Iron out every detail: who reads in what order, where to sit, when and how to react if there's a blowup.
  • 3) Do your best to persuade your loved one to accept treatment. They have the option to refuse, but make it very clear that you will follow through on removing yourself from their sphere of destructive behavior.
  • 4) Insist that treatment must be started immediately. Time to "think it over" is an excuse to continue denying the problem, an opportunity to hide from the situation, or a dangerous escape through binging.
