A Fact Sheet for Intervention

People who are addicted to drugs and alcohol are usually unaware that they have a problem. Even if others try to tell them that there is something wrong with their behavior, they don't listen and try to rationalize their actions by saying that what they are doing is normal. In order to truly help people like this, objective and open communication is necessary. A professional interventionist or therapist can help lead family and friends in a discussion of this nature. This type of open, honest communication is called an intervention.

At The Canyon, we provide support and treatment to people who are suffering from alcohol and drug addiction. We can also provide professional resources to help family and friends intervene on behalf of someone they care about who is addicted to drugs or alcohol.

History of the Intervention

Drug rehab intervention has been around in its formal form at least since the 1960s, when Vernon Johnson began testing out some of his theories. His techniques were solidified into the technique of intervention, which is still used today. In a book he published called I'll Quit Tomorrow he laid out the basics of intervention, including what to expect and how interventions should be approached. As interventions became more popular, people began to see how they could be applied to broader situations, and they are very popular today.

The Purpose of an Intervention

The ultimate goal of an intervention is to get the drug abuser/addict into treatment. However, unless done properly, an intervention could do more harm than good. In most cases, you can't force the addict to go to treatment, so you have to reason with them and try to get them to go of their own free will. However, you also must remember that you cannot let the situation get worse. Even if the intervention does not go well, you should cease protecting the addict. Protecting them and rationalizing their behavior and actions will do more harm than good.

The Intervention Attendees

People who care about an addict, such as their family and friends, should be the ones who attend an intervention. If someone who the addict trusts is the one who communicates with them about their problem, they may be more likely to listen and accept the offered drug addiction treatment. When an intervention is led by a professional interventionist and assisted by family and friends, there is an even higher chance that it will be successful and that the addict will choose to enter addiction treatment.
