Interventions and Their Purpose
Drug rehab interventions used to be all about getting a person into treatment so that they could receive help for their addiction. However, in recent times, the focus has shifted from solely treatment to helping the addict realize the consequences of their actions. People who perform interventions want to help the addict understand what their addiction does not only to themselves, but to the people around them. By bringing this information to the attention of the addict, the addict can come to understand what effects their addictions have and what solutions are available to them to help them rebuild their lives and repair their relationships with other people.
At The Canyon, we have expert care available for people who need treatment for drug addictions as well as experts who can help you perform a successful intervention for your friend or family member suffering from drug and/or alcohol addiction.
Intervention Purpose #1: To Recognize that Help is Necessary
Many drug addicts believe that their drug addiction is normal. This is because most addicts spend the majority of their time in the company of other addicts where such drug abuse is normal behavior. Thus, in an intervention, one of the purposes is to help the addict realize that their behavior is not normal and that they can get help. Family and friends, along with a qualified counselor, can help the addict realize that they have a problem and then introduce them to possible solutions to the problem. With the proper attitude and methodology, a successful intervention is possible, and an addict's life can be changed for the better.
Intervention Purpose #2: To Choose the Best Treatment Option for the Individual
In an intervention situation, an expertly trained professional can assess the level of addiction that a person is afflicted with and can make appropriate suggestions for the types of treatment that should be used. This is important because every person's addiction is different, and every person needs a treatment program that is specially shaped to their unique and specific needs.
Intervention Purpose #3: To Involve the Family in the Addict's Healing Process
The process of intervention and treatment is not one that should be completed solely by the addict. Family and friends should also be involved for moral support. They should also be involved in group therapies and in a healing process that can help to repair the damaged relationships caused by the addiction. Many family and friends go into the process with fear, anger and nervousness because they may not know what to expect from the intervention/treatment, or because they feel hurt and vulnerable due to the addict's actions. However, an intervention needs the help of as many people as possible, especially from the people who are close to the addict.
