Choices to Make in Staging an Intervention
If you are staging an intervention for your drug or alcohol addicted loved one, you may feel quite a bit of pressure... and it's no wonder. There are a lot of decisions to make before you even begin the stress of the event itself. The following are a few of the choices that are in front of you as well as some tips to help you get through it.
If you decide that staging an intervention on your own will be too overwhelming or if you have concerns that it will be as effective as you had hoped, you can hire a professional interventionist to help you. At The Canyon, our interventionists will help you plan the intervention as well as mediate the event itself and then accompany your loved one to treatment at its finish if they agree to go to rehab. Contact us for more information.
Choices to Make in Staging an Intervention: Who To Invite
The people who come to the intervention will essentially set the tone. You want people in attendance who are loved and respected by the subject of the intervention and also people who care deeply about the outcome of the event (i.e., whether or not your loved one choose rehab). People who are passionate speak passionately and these words are all you have to convince your loved one that treatment is not only necessary but that the time to begin is now. If your loved one respects the people speaking, he or she will be more inclined to get drug rehab help at the close of the intervention, the ultimate goal of the entire event.
Choices to Make in Staging an Intervention: When to Have It
Of course, choosing the day and time will begin with the schedules of those attending. It may be impossible to accommodate everyone, so you may need to figure out who the most important attendees are and go from there.
Unless there is a major problem at work or with a family member, you should not choose a date and time based upon your loved one other than to choose a time when he or she will not expect the intervention. It is not an ambush, but more than likely, if your loved one knows what awaits them, they will avoid an uncomfortable situation. Choose a time that is most convenient for you and the other participants and when your loved one would most likely be at the location for the event.
Choices to Make in Staging an Intervention: What to Say
Choose your words carefully. You are there because you feel emotional about your loved one and the state of their health at the moment, but you must keep it short and to the point, nonjudgmental, telling them that you are concerned about their health, their safety and their future and that you want them to get treatment. Follow up with a short example, something that happened due to their drug use that hurt you.
