Types of Interventions to Use
Intervention is a way for people who care about an addict to help them with their addiction. It gives them a way to voice their concerns in an open forum that is non-judgmental. Many people who have been addicted to alcohol and drugs have successfully recovered, and most of those recoveries have started with an intervention. There are a variety of types of interventions that can be used, and the appropriate one to use depends on various factors.
At The Canyon, we can provide you with a professional interventionist and help you plan a successful intervention for your loved one and get them on their own personal road to recovery.
Types of Interventions to Use: Brief Interventions
The first type of intervention, a brief intervention, is used to help the addict change their behavior. In this kind of intervention, the point is to help point out consequences of drinking or doing drugs and what types of effects an addict can expect to encounter if they continue. It may also include helping the addict establish goals for changing their behavior and could include a contract that the addict may agree to in order to help them change their behavior.
Types of Interventions to Use: Pre-treatment Interventions
If a brief intervention does not work, the next level of intervention is a pre-treatment intervention. In this type of session, a professional meets with family and friends of an addict to gather information and facts about the person. Once the professional has all of this information, they can then go and speak with the addict. At the same time, the family and friends of the addict may make changes to what they do in order to help the intervention along. Once the professional has met with the addict, more sessions may be required, and it can sometimes take several sessions to help get the addict into addiction treatment.
Types of Interventions to Use: Motivational Interviewing
It has long been the thought that addicts naturally have a denial mentality when it comes to their addictions. However, in 1991, two researchers put forward the hypothesis that most denial actually stems from an interventionist's or therapist's approach when it comes to dealing with addicts. The researchers, Miller and Rollnick, came up with a different way of approaching addicts that was intended to motivate them instead of confront them. This gave rise to the motivational interviewing type of intervention, which is used to help addicts in a nonjudgmental manner.
Types of Interventions: What are the Chances of Failure?
Even though there is a chance of failure during a drug rehab intervention, historically, the rate of success of a person completely recovering is about 85 percent, so interventions can truly help people. When they fail, though, it's usually because the addict decides to say "no" to getting help and rejects the assistance of their family and friends. In this case, there's not much that the family and friends can do since the addict has made up their mind to continue taking drugs. In some cases, even if an intervention is successful, a person may not successfully complete treatment. However, despite all of this, the rate of successful recovery after an intervention is high.
