Drug Rehab and Methadone

Methadone is one of the most common medications used to treat opiate addiction in the United States. It's extremely effective in both the detox and treatment portions of opiate rehab because it blocks the opiate receptors and allows you to immediately stop taking heroin or prescription painkillers with a minimum of opiate withdrawal symptoms.

At The Canyon, we feel that some opiate addiction cases will benefit from methadone treatment during drug rehab.

Drug Rehab and Methadone: A Positive Option

Rather than continue using needles to take heroin or wreaking havoc in your body with a myriad of prescription painkillers at ultra high doses, methadone allows you to stop taking your drug of choice right away and begin drug treatment. There is little to no down time spent on detoxing because you step down on your methadone dose over time. Because you are physically able to focus and concentrate on your recovery, you get more out of it, which is especially helpful if you are enrolled in a short-term inpatient treatment program.

Drug Rehab and Methadone: Healing at Your Own Pace

If you have spent years addicted to heroin or other opiate drugs, it is more than just the physical dependence that you must break during treatment. Sometimes it is the ritual of getting high or taking the drug; sometimes it is just knowing that the drug is in your system that makes you feel calm or able to function. Even if you are physically healthy enough to quit cold turkey and handle the opiate detox despite the discomfort and pain, the knowledge that the drugs are no longer in your system can be harder to handle. When you are on methadone, you can lower your dose as you are ready, keeping it at a blocking dose-or a dose that won't allow you to get high off other opiates-if you prefer or lowering it incrementally every couple of weeks. It's your treatment.

Drug Rehab and Methadone: Sustaining Abstinence

The point of drug rehab is to help you reach abstinence. The goal, however, is that you will take the tools you learn that keep you clean in rehab and apply them when you return home. Sustained and lengthy abstinence is the goal and methadone is a great tool to make that happen. Accountability is built into the program since you have to show up daily for your dose. You earn 'take home' doses with good behavior and time spent in the program and you have a methadone counselor who assists you in creating a treatment plan and tracking your goals. Methadone isn't right for everyone, but for some, it allows for an otherwise drug free life that wouldn't be possible without it.
