How Does Drug Rehabilitation Work?
Drug rehabilitation can feel a little mysterious if you don't know much about it. For some, that mystery is scary. Fear of the unknown is a common reason that many put off or avoid drug rehab altogether. In an effort to dispel some of the myths and shed light on the mystery of drug rehab, here are a few basic phases of treatment that you can expect to encounter in drug rehabilitation whether your drug of choice is alcohol or heroin or cocaine or a combination of drugs.
At The Canyon, we provide a drug rehabilitation that is tailored to meet the individual needs of each person who comes to stay with us. Depending upon other co-occurring disorders, either medical or mental, the drug of choice, the length of your active addiction and a number of other factors, your drug rehab experience may be modified slightly, but in general, you can expect to experience the following.
Drug Rehabilitation: Drug Detox
If you are physically dependent on your drug of choice-that is, if you experience physically painful withdrawal symptoms when you stop taking the drug-then your first phase of treatment will be a drug detox. If you are experiencing withdrawal symptoms, it is unlikely you will be able to focus on anything else, so we begin by either treating your physical symptoms and making you as comfortable as possible while you wait for them to dissipate or we cut them off at the pass with a maintenance treatment. Usually for opiate addicts, maintenance treatments provide you with a medication that will keep your withdrawal symptoms at bay and then we will slowly lower your dosage so that your detox will continue throughout your treatment.
Drug Rehabilitation: Drug Addiction Treatment and Relapse Prevention
Drug addiction treatment has a number of components: personal therapy, group therapy, therapeutic activities like art and hiking or horseback riding, nutrition, and in some cases, medication. It all works together with one goal in focus: relapse prevention. While you are in drug rehab, you are building up some clean time. You are gaining confidence in the fact that you can actually make it through the day without your drug of choice. But each day you know that you are one day closer to returning home where you can easily get high or drunk if you want to. So during drug rehab, you will learn different ways to deal with the stressors or triggers that make you feel hopeless or feeling like using so that when you return home you are prepared for your new life.
Drug Rehabilitation: Aftercare Services or Sober Living
When you have completed treatment, you may choose either to enter a sober living facility or to return home with the support of aftercare services. Either way, you maintain some level of contact with your counselors, though far more so in sober living, and won't simply find yourself adrift without help should you need it.
