Malnutrition and Drug Use

Malnutrition and Drug Use Is there a connection between the malnutrition and drug use? Why do so many who arrive for treatment show signs of malnutrition?

As an addiction takes hold and grows, other aspects of life become less of a priority. Relationships, work, even food, can all suffer in the face of drug or alcohol abuse. That may explain the correlation between addiction and malnutrition. For some, it’s related to the loss of appetite brought on by alcohol or drugs like heroin. In other ways, it’s just practical: If someone isn’t taking care of themselves in other ways, they aren’t watching their nutrition either.

Health Problems with Malnutrition

It can complicate the treatment process, too, as someone who is malnourished is more prone to infection because his or her immune system is compromised. This common problem can also cause breakdowns in the body’s basic functioning, from digestion problems to skin issues to muscle aches or fatigue. Then there’s the tooth decay, hair loss and ceasing menstruating for women of childbearing years. Prolonged malnutrition can lead to even more dangerous – and irreversible – health issues.

That’s why it’s important to get clients on a healthy eating plan as soon as they begin the treatment process. Organic, fresh foods are able to restore nutrients to bodies lacking those important substances. Staff can also work with individuals on a customized plan for getting the client back to physical health as they work through their addiction issues.
