Anti-addiction Pill Drug Treatment?

Anti-addiction PillsCan relief from addiction come in pill form? Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based company Addiction Therapeutix Inc. plans to use compounds licensed from the Medical College of Wisconsin and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to develop therapies for people addicted to alcohol, painkillers and nicotine, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

This month, the company sealed an exclusive option agreement with the Medical College for a morphine-related compound called dextro-morphine. The substance has shown promise in blocking addiction to pain relievers, nicotine and even heroin.

With nearly 50 million Americans suffering from chronic pain, doctors face the problem of treating that pain without their patients getting addicted. This makes preventing and treating this type of addiction a growing industry. Addiction Therapeutix is reportedly in discussions with other academic centers about the possibility of licensing more addiction-related compounds.

Drug Addiction Rehab

Of course, drug treatment is about much more than just treating the physical effects of a chemical substance. There are often underlying behavioral issues that accompany addiction and emotional issues that arise during the addiction process. That's why comprehensive inpatient treatment offers the best chance for long-term recovery in most cases.

If you or someone you know needs help with a substance abuse problem, contact The Canyon at our toll-free number. Someone is there to take your call 24 hours a day and answer any questions you have.
