Clinical Proof Meditation Works
Meditation helps reduce stress levels, a new study proves.
We’ve all heard that meditation can help with stress and there are a host of other benefits that meditation enthusiasts espouse. But did you know there are actually clinical studies that prove the benefits?
The latest study on meditation shows that this ancient practice can help practitioners find peace by rewiring the brain. The technique is called integrative mind-body training (IBMT) and it has been shown to produce dramatic changes in the brains of volunteers just hours after learning the method, according to a report on Behavioral Health Central’s website.
How Meditation Works
So how does it work? Scans revealed that neuron connectivity was boosted in a part of the brain important for regulating emotions and behavior, the report said. "The pathway that has the largest change due to IBMT is one that previously was shown to relate to individual differences in the person's ability to regulate conflict," according to Michael Posner, a psychologist and professor who co-led the research. His team had previously proven that meditation reduces levels of anxiety, depression, anger and fatigue.
The study, conducted on students at the University of Oregon, consisted of half of the participants receiving IBMT training while the others were taught more traditional relaxation techniques. MRIs were used to examine brain connectivity in order to determine the results.
Meditation for Substance Abuse Rehab
These results can also be applied to substance abuse treatment. Various types of meditation are already used in the treatment of substance abuse and alcohol abuse, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). These relaxation techniques lower stress levels during the treatment process and teach those in recovery a coping mechanism that they can use for years to come.
