Drug Treatment for College Students

College students are notorious for excess in terms of drug and alcohol usage. Newly out of the house and faced with a wide range of new options and choices, it's a rare college student who doesn't indulge once or twice. For some, however, experimentation and overindulgence can become the norm rather than the exception and when this happens, their entire future can be threatened. If you are a college student struggling with alcohol or drug addiction or someone you love is having a problem with addiction while in school, getting help now before it's too late should be an urgent priority.

The Canyon provides college students with inpatient or outpatient treatment programs. Local college students in southern California may be able to work our outpatient treatment into their school schedules. Others may choose to join us over summer break to minimize the impact on their studies.

Drug Treatment for College Students: Is it Necessary?

Because college students so often have large parties where alcohol abuse is common, it's hard to tell the difference between abuse and addiction. While drug and alcohol addiction are medical diseases that require treatment, drug and alcohol abuse is not. It may require an intervention, perhaps even some 12 step meetings, group or one on one therapy, but drug and alcohol treatment is for those college students who:

  • Choose to drink or get high despite the negative consequences to their grades or relationships
  • Spend money that should be spent on school supplies, books or living expenses on drugs or alcohol
  • Get arrested or ill due to excessive drug and alcohol use and still continue to get high or drunk

Drug Treatment for College Students: When is a Good Time?

Like all medical conditions, early detection and treatment is important to a successful recovery. The first semester that grades fall and it becomes clear that your loved one is consistently choosing drugs and alcohol over other activities and allowing their use to limit their choices or put them in danger, an intervention is essential. Few college students who struggle with addiction recognize the danger in drug and alcohol use before it has overtaken them. It is important that those who care about them carefully assess how serious the situation is and take steps to help them decrease the harm they are inflicting on their health and future.

Drug Treatment for College Students: Before It's Too Late

College is an important time not only for building foundations for a future career but also for developing into an adult. Some relationships made now will affect the rest of their lives. Learned concepts and skills may become a part of the jobs or higher level degrees they choose later. Helping the college student in your life who is endangering him or herself with drug and alcohol addiction before it's too late could save their lives on many fronts.
